As #IODP #Exp405 drills into the Japan Trench, the team are not just after core samples, but data too - collected by tools in the drill head.
And experts like Maria Jose are on hand interpret what is received.

Yes! The long-awaited plate boundary from the fault zone was on deck! 🙌👏
The ship was filled with smiles, joy and excitement!!

On 10/21 (Mon), #Chikyu resumed coring!👷 From the condition of the #coresamples, it looks like we might be approaching the plate boundary fault, our main target! 🌏 Scientists & lab techs onboard are excitedly checking the core as they come aboard🧐

A M6 earthquake on the East Anatolian Fault shook eastern Türkiye today, causing light damage and reviving memories of the 2023 sequence.
How does this event fit into the bigger picture of recent earthquakes on this dangerous fault?

Here is a a new article with perspective on the ‘megaquake’ alert issued by JMA in Japan, with some comments from me on the relevance to Cascadia. By Robin George Andrews @SquigglyVolcano technologyreview.com/2024/08…

The mag 7.1 quake near Miyazaki is a subduction megathrust quake, and has motivated JMA to issue an alert that the chance of a much larger one on the adjacent Nankai segment(s) is heightened in the short term. If we had a similar event in Cascadia, the response might be the same.
BREAKING: The Meteorological Agency has issued an alert warning about a possible large earthquake around the Nankai Trough – the first ever such alert – following a magnitude 7.1 quake that struck earlier in the day off the coast of Kyushu. japantimes.co.jp/news/2024/0…

A very eventful, yet bittersweet, week 7 comes to a close as we begin the long transit back to #Amsterdam. Everyone gathered for the last core to arrive on deck Friday afternoon, marking both the end of the expedition and the program that made it possible.
🚨 We are hiring a #paleomag technician (0.5 FTE) for the #hei_MAG lab at the Institute of #EarthSciences @GeowHeidelberg. 🧲 🌍 ⚡️ 🖥️ 🪨

What's the relationship between global warming and earthquakes? A new #SRL editorial by @GFZ_Potsdam and @USC scientists argues that as sea level rises, coastal regions with already-stressed faults (like the San Andreas) will be more prone to quakes.
