#SocISeré3Cat ▶️ 3cat.cat/socisere

The AI supply chain doesn’t start in the data centre. It starts in the mine. Three news items from the past few days show that the tech industry is now realising this itself. 1⃣Micron is funding the expansion of a high-purity critical minerals refinery in New York State and has secured its output long term in return. A memory chipmaker is investing two steps upstream of its own production. 2⃣Anglo American: CEO Duncan Wanblad told the FT Metals & Mining Summit that tech companies are in talks about offtake agreements and equity stakes to secure copper for data centres. Nothing has been signed yet, but he describes the interest as “deep”. 3⃣Japan is only months away from running out of yttrium, according to the Financial Times. Among other uses, the metal coats the plasma-etching chambers used in chipmaking. Outside China, yttrium oxide now costs $1,150 per kilogram. Inside China, it costs $9. Put together, the picture is clear. The bottleneck of the AI economy is moving along the value chain. Compute and fab capacity are no longer the only constraints. So are metals that barely register by volume but whose absence can shut down entire production lines. The role of tech companies is changing, too. They are going from buyers to financiers of refineries and mines. What they are paying for is not a better price but a place in the queue. A price gap of more than a hundredfold is no longer a market signal. It shows that access to raw materials has become a question of geopolitics. Anyone funding chip fabs in Europe should look at refineries and mines with the same determination.

Qatar, one of the world’s largest LNG exporters, just signed a deal to buy 4 million tonnes/year of US LNG through 2054. Let that sink in. The Iran war has so disrupted global energy flows that even Qatar is securing supply from America. The energy system is being fundamentally reorganized.

#Macron20h
