Kenya is Africa’s most compulsive gambling nation. That is not an accusation but a statistical verdict. According to a @GeoPoll survey conducted in June 2026 across seven African countries, 64 percent of Kenyans placed a football bet in the past 12 months, the highest rate on the continent, ahead of Ghana at 60 percent, South Africa at 58 percent, and far above Egypt at 25 percent. The 2026 FIFA World Cup, now underway across the United States, Canada and Mexico, has only deepened that compulsion. Interest in watching the tournament among Kenyans rose from 86 percent in 2022 to 94 percent in 2026, and 27 percent of Kenyan respondents say they place or review bets during the halftime interval alone, again the highest among all markets surveyed. The numbers paint a portrait of a nation where football and gambling have fused into a single experience, where the 15-minute break between halves is not rest but a second window for wagering. What they do not capture is the human wreckage underneath: the depression, the debt, the domestic violence, the young men who spiral into alcoholism when the accumulator fails for the twelfth consecutive week. Kenya is not just Africa’s biggest betting market. It is also a country where the regulatory architecture meant to govern that market has been compromised, captured and, in documented cases, simply ignored. The clearest evidence that Kenya’s new regulatory architecture has not translated into enforcement is @mozzartbetkenya . The betting firm, which operates across Kenya and holds a licence up for renewal with the GRA by June 30, 2026, has been the subject of formal court findings of money laundering. This is not an allegation. It is a judicial determination. Under any credible interpretation of international anti-money laundering standards, a company with a court finding of this nature would face immediate licence suspension pending investigation and a rigorous fitness and propriety assessment before any renewal could be considered. What do Kenyans actually think about the proposed US-supported Ebola quarantine facility? The concern is about disease transmission risk, not diplomatic grievance. And a majority still support broader health cooperation with the US. Full report: hubs.ly/Q04jT4Fn0 #GeoPoll

The establishment of an Ebola treatment center in Laikipia has been the hottest debate in Kenya over the last few days. @GeoPoll conducted a survey on public opinions on the plan. My highlight is that stray "kila mtu akae kwao ala!" 😂😂😂

Artificial intelligence has advanced at remarkable speed, but its progress has been shaped by a narrow foundation of data. Most large language models are trained on internet text, books, and online forums. This scale is impressive, but it is not representative. The voices that dominate these sources are often urban, wealthy, educated, English-speaking, and other world-dominant languages. When models learn only from them, the risk is obvious: bias in, bias out. The result is AI that works well for some, and poorly for many. Representative AI requires something different. It demands that models hear the breadth of human experience and language variation, not just the loudest or most connected groups. That begins with representative data. For decades, survey science has developed the tools to measure populations accurately through sampling, stratification, and weighting. Unlike scraped web data, which reflects who chooses to publish, survey research ensures inclusion of those who might otherwise be invisible. This is where GeoPoll’s work is unique: geopoll.com/blog/representat… #AI #DATA #LLMs #Research

In South Africa’s rapidly evolving fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) market, a quiet revolution is underway, one led not by price tags or flashy marketing, but by a steadfast commitment to quality. GeoPoll’s latest report, based on fresh insights from 500 South African consumers and 2,547 others across the continent, uncovers the drivers behind modern consumer choices and the retail channels that win their trust. The Reign of Quality From toothpaste to tea, South Africans are prioritizing performance and reliability.
