It’s quite striking what a few German state elections can produce (& what the removal of the Greens can accomplish). Who knows, perhaps a few more AfD electoral breakthroughs could prompt the German government to come to its senses & start substantively engaging with Russia.
Russia must end its war of aggression against Ukraine & cease its hostile actions against Germany & its allies.I conveyed this message to the Russian Foreign Minister at #UNGA. Germany will pursue diplomacy if Russia seriously engages in negotiations towards a sustainable peace.
These states depend on cultivating the spectre of a Russian "threat", yet recoil when the fear they cultivate produces undesirable consequences for them. The Thomas theorem applies neatly: situations defined as real become real in their consequences.
It’s empty on the other side of Estonia’s border because Russia’s troops are in Ukraine.
Therefore, all the talk about Russia potentially attacking NATO soon is simply not supported by what we see on the ground.
Putin wants to instill fear in us, but we must remain calm, stand firm, and keep our red lines.
I stressed this today in New York at @ConcordiaSummit, where I spoke about NATO’s eastern flank security together with former Polish President @AndrzejDuda.

Trump working on deal to buy potash from Belarus for lower price than Canada ctvnews.ca/canada/article/tr…
It seems that Trump has delivered for the neocons once again. Now watch his liberal/neocon "opponents" in the US and beyond scramble to explain away what they cannot openly celebrate. 1/6
They can pretend that nothing fundamentally new has happened while benefiting from precisely the expansion of US strategic power they advocate. In effect, they can oppose Trump’s methods and rhetoric while quietly pocketing the geopolitical gains he has delivered for them. 5/6
Canada joining Erasmus+ would be welcome, but better still would be for Canada to spearhead a hemisphere-wide educational & cultural exchange scheme, deepening ties across an Americas it has long neglected, while bolstering Canada’s sense of its place within the hemisphere. 1/2
Presenting "Europe" as a geopolitical actor is misleading. Europe is a continent comprising 50 states, each with distinct foreign/defence policies, economic priorities & national interests. While some of these interests may overlap at times, they do not necessarily converge. 1/2
If what is now taking shape in Canada is a struggle between the foot soldiers of America and the foot soldiers of Europe, a struggle long in the making, then Canada is in for one hell of a ride. 1/7

Without such a project, the emerging Americanist–Europeanist struggle risks becoming a proxy struggle over which external orientation will define Canada, while the question of Canada itself recedes. 6/7
