Favourite article of the year so far. 😉

NZ generates plenty of valuable intellectual capital. But we often do not retain high growth tech businesses for long. Article I co-wrote about it got published @NewsroomNZ newsroom.co.nz/2026/07/21/in…
Finally some great news for our science innovation ecosystem. Kudos to the govt for understanding that entrepreneurship does not succeed in a vacuum. geniusrefi.com/40m-funding-f…

On the road to recovery now after a rather too close shave with lymphoma in 2025. Raglan this weekend has been an amazingly restful location with rejuvenating sea air, amazing views and some overdue quiet time for writing and reflection about what's next.
Lest we forget. This weekend we remember a failed military campaign. But nothing has really changed in the century since then. Unhinged political leaders continue to wreak havoc on human lives and the global economy in a struggle for power and resources.
Gallipoli was a hastily launched military campaign over a maritime choke point – and has parallels with the Strait of Hormuz. @MeighenMcCrae @OurANU theconversation.com/gallipol…
Swapped out Gemini for a basic version of Groq Llama to test my @GeniusReFi Explore app prototype. Super fast and much easier to administer than clunky Google dashboard. Outputs are very similar however. More research needed. Better fun than doing EOY accounts, for sure. 😆
The Great Gig In The Sky. 🌒
OK this is cool. The first time humans have seen the whole Mare Orientale on the far side of the Moon with their own eyes. Usually hidden from our view on Earth, even Apollo astronauts didn't see it completely because of their orbit and illumination conditions (Apollo 17 caught a partial glimpse lit by 'Earthshine'). 14 months and $20M+ later - one roundabout. Why are we so inefficient at doing infrastructure? nzherald.co.nz/bay-of-plenty…
Updated this article to reflect the collaboration between Massey and Uni of Nottingham spin-offs. We've got some cool partnerships @GeniusReFi in the pipeline too! Watch this space. 😊

If there's one thing we do need in Canterbury, it's more native tree plantings. So pleased to be able to support.
We've pledged to fund 100 new trees in this planting initiative. The project nicely aligns with our goal of creating regenerative outcomes from academic work. Please join us! givealittle.co.nz/cause/500-…
Nordic states are taking a cluster approach to next generation science innovation. Patient capital and robust industry-academia networks are key.
Crisis? What crisis? The current NZ government manufactured a recession that was never necessary and how an abundance mindset could alter the trajectory. One economist's data based view. interest.co.nz/economy/13745…
"If New Zealand desires a thriving, innovative, pioneering research community – and all its potential economic, social, and environmental benefits – this will not happen by accident. It will require dedicated, persistent, vigorous advocacy, along with visionary political, business and civic leadership, and durable cross-party support." newsroom.co.nz/2026/03/06/if…

Agentic tool sets and AI-assisted research with humans in the loop are the future for accelerating scientific discovery.
Today we are announcing a major update to Edison Literature, our scientific deep research agent. It represents a significant advancement over our previous PaperQA2 algorithm: it enables deeper reasoning over 100s of scientific documents, can retrieve information from figures and tables, and is state-of-the art among other deep research systems on scientific tasks.
Second article in my series on how science innovation is booming across the Nordic countries right now thanks to diligent ecosystem development and smart capital.

It's pretty clear that divisive, left/right politics and unimaginative binary thinking is contributing to NZ's decline. If you are interested in business and innovation, but also care about big issues like environment and health - join me in helping @Qiulae and the teal team get across the line this election year. Collaboration is the way forward.
