We achieved a world-first! LM26 is the first fusion machine in the world to achieve 1 keV with practical low speed compression. This is a major step forward on General Fusion’s commercialization plan to deliver reliable, economical, clean power from fusion energy.
It’s truly an exciting moment for our team. 1 keV, which is more than 12 million degrees Celsius, was our first major milestone for the LM26 program. We worked with UKAEA to design, install, and commission a gold-standard Thomson scattering system on LM26, giving us an accurate, robust measurement.
We also saw meaningful ion heating, and increased density and magnetic field from the compression – which tells us we’re where we want to be in terms of plasma stability and heating.
All together, the combined results provide further confidence in our core MTF technology principles.
Our CEO Greg Twinney dives into what we achieved, why it matters and what’s next here: generalfusion.com/post/1-kev…
General Fusion has achieved a world-first compressional plasma heating result with our large-scale Lawson Machine 26 ("LM26") demonstration, a key milestone on our path to commercialize fusion energy!
Using Magnetized Target Fusion ("MTF"), LM26 has reached electron temperatures exceeding 12 million degrees Celsius, more than 1 keV, measured with both Thomson scattering and absolute extreme ultraviolet ("AXUV") diagnostics, and accompanied by meaningful ion heating. LM26 is the first fusion machine in the world to achieve 1 keV with practical, low-speed compression. The result marks a major step forward on the Company’s plan to deliver reliable baseload, economical clean power from fusion energy.
Support from the Government of Canada has played an important role in advancing our technology over the past 20+ years. We’re grateful for that support as we celebrate this latest milestone and continue to advance fusion energy in Canada.
The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions, shared her perspective on what this achievement means:
“General Fusion's latest achievement underscores Canada's strength as a global leader in clean technology innovation. Advancing fusion energy from the laboratory toward commercial application will unlock significant economic opportunities, drive industrial growth, and support highly skilled jobs. This milestone highlights the value of supporting Canadian champions that are transforming bold ideas into solutions and will ensure Canada can lead and compete in emerging global energy markets.”

General Fusion has completed the first major technical milestone of its LM26 program with world-first fusion results co-authored by the UK Atomic Energy Authority.
We achieved electron temperatures of 1.1 keV (12.6 million degrees Celsius). The result was measured just prior to peak compression and is detailed in a technical paper co-authored by the @UKAEAofficial that is being concurrently posted on General Fusion’s website and submitted for peer review.
Our LM26 program was designed to reach key technical milestones on the path to a first-of-a-kind fusion plant in the next decade. LM26 is the first fusion machine in the world to achieve 1 keV with practical, low-speed compression.
“Achieving a plasma electron temperature of over 1 keV marks an important milestone for General Fusion since achieving hot electrons is a necessary step for proving fusion confinement concepts,” said Professor Dennis Whyte, Chief Executive Officer, UKAEA.
“This achievement reflects the tangible progress being made by General Fusion and others across a diverse set of fusion approaches in the private sector, while the collaboration with UKAEA, contributing its specialist expertise, highlights the value of robust public-private partnerships in broadly advancing fusion and sharing scientific results. It also continues a great tradition of international scientific collaboration: in 1969, a UK team used the then-new laser-based Thomson scattering technique to verify 1 keV electrons in a Russian tokamak, helping to establish what became the standard magnetic confinement concept. We now look forward to the outcome of the formal peer review process and the publication of the paper in Review of Scientific Instruments.”
Only a few fusion companies have surpassed the industry-recognized milestone of 1 keV, all using other fusion approaches. This world-first result for General Fusion’s MTF approach marks a measurable step forward for General Fusion in its aim to deliver baseload, economical clean power from fusion energy.

It was a spectacular celebration of all things General Fusion at Grouse Mountain.
Pushing fusion forward takes hard work, dedication, and an extraordinary team. After so many recent milestones, it was a chance to pause, connect, and celebrate the people making it all happen, but also the families whose encouragement and support are such an important part of the journey.
Thank you to our team and everyone who has supported General Fusion along the way!
It was an honour to host the Consul General of Japan in Vancouver Yoshiaki Takahashi at our state-of-the-art labs at General Fusion.
Japan is a leading nation advancing fusion energy development, particularly in building the fusion supply chain through companies like @Kyotofusioneer. Under a 2023 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Kyoto Fusioneering, we are working together to advance critical systems to commercialize Magnetized Target Fusion, such as the tritium fuel cycle. We look forward to working with the Consul General to explore future collaboration opportunities with Japan's fusion ecosystem.
Thank you for the visit, Consul General Takahashi!
Canada and the UK are developing one of the most significant international partnerships emerging in the global fusion sector.
Our Director of Strategic Partnerships Myles Hildebrand was in London for Canada-UK Nuclear Day, speaking to the importance of collaboration between our countries.
General Fusion is proud to have a long-standing partnership with the UK Atomic Energy Authority, helping to validate our results and deploy cutting-edge fusion diagnostics for our machines.
Thank you to the Canada-UK Chamber of Commerce for hosting this event!
Our Director of Strategic Partnerships, Myles Hildebrand, was recently in Italy meeting with our partners at @Renexia_it and visiting site options for potential future Magnetized Target Fusion (MTF) power plants.
The trip follows the framework agreement we announced with Renexia in June to explore the commercial deployment of our technology in Italy.
There’s more work ahead, and we’re pleased to be working with the Renexia team to help lay the groundwork for commercial fusion energy.

It was a pleasure to welcome Ian Bell, Associate Director, Innovation Partnerships at @innovationubc to General Fusion!
His visit was an excellent opportunity for us to showcase our lab and continued growth while exploring how our organizations can build on our many years of working together. General Fusion has a long history of collaboration with UBC through our award-winning co-op program. And our founder, Dr. Michel Laberge, earned his PhD in Physics there with a focus on fusion energy.
Thank you for the visit! We look forward to continuing the dialogue and exploring future opportunities for collaboration.
We’ve added a new piece of equipment to our suite of fusion diagnostics: a Helium-3 detector from our partners at @CNL_LNC.
This diagnostic tool will help us detect neutrons generated during plasma compressions on LM26.
The He-3 detector will work alongside our neutron counting scintillators – which are a practical, scalable method to measure ion temperature, a key parameter in the success of our LM26 program. Adding this diagnostic will help bolster our neutron data, giving us direct, unambiguous evidence when fusion reactions are occurring.
Thank you to Bryan Van der Ende from CNL for visiting General Fusion and helping install the He-3 detector.
At General Fusion we're working on something that matters: bringing the power of the sun and the stars to earth with our practical approach to fusion energy.

Earlier this month, members of General Fusion's tech team attended the European Physical Society's (EPS) 52nd Annual Conference on Plasma Physics.
The team provided a summary of Magnetized Target Fusion results achieved on our machines through the years, and how they support the development of a future MTF power plant design.
In addition, the team provided an update on recent results from LM26 — our commercially relevant scale demonstration machine — that demonstrated meaningful plasma heating to electron temperatures of approximately 8.4 million degrees Celsius (0.72 keV) through the mechanical compression of a plasma with a lithium liner.
Thank you to EPS for hosting this incredible conference and giving us the opportunity to update the European fusion community on our progress!
