Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President of the United States, is the only sitting President in American history to be arrested. His crime? Speeding. In a horse and buggy. Grant was a total speed demon who loved racing his horses through the streets of Washington DC way too fast. A Black police officer named William West pulled him over, recognized the President, and let him off with a warning. The very next day he caught Grant tearing down the same street again. This time West arrested the President of the United States, walked him to the station, and Grant paid a $20 bond. He reportedly told the officer he'd done the right thing by enforcing the law. The speeding wasn't random. Grant was maybe the greatest horseman ever to hold the office. As a cadet he set a high jump record at West Point, on horseback, that stood unbroken for 25 years. Soldiers said he could ride and control animals nobody else could get near. Now here's the part that doesn't fit at all. This is the man who commanded the Union Army through the bloodiest battles in American history, and he could not stand the sight of blood. It made him physically ill. He refused to eat any meat that was even slightly pink. He had his steak charred almost to a crisp, because a red, rare piece of meat turned his stomach. A war general who won the Civil War, gagging at an undercooked steak. And his other big habit was cigars. Grant went through as many as 10 a day. Once the papers reported he liked cigars, fans mailed him so many that he ended up with more than 20,000 of them. That habit almost certainly contributed to the throat cancer that eventually killed him. So the real Ulysses S. Grant: the only President ever arrested, busted for street racing his horse, a record-setting rider who won the Civil War but couldn't look at a rare steak without getting queasy, buried under 20,000 donated cigars.
