UPDATE ON IMPORTANT NEW FINLAND STUDY | Professor Kaltiala has responded to criticism of the Finnish study, which found that mental health may get worse after young people undergo medical gender transition.
One critique of the study argues that psychiatric appointments are part and parcel of the gender-transition process in Finland and therefore may not point to serious psychiatric morbidity.
In their paper, Professor Kaltiala and her colleagues acknowledged the limitation that their study could not analyse in detail why these patients needed psychiatric services.
Asked about this issue, she told me that the healthcare register data used for the study included diagnoses and in-patient periods but not treatment nor information about a patientās problems related to family life, romantic relationships or work.
However, Professor Kaltiala said the young people seen by specialised psychiatric services in her country would have āsevere disordersā. These services were focused on āthose really in needā, consistent with national criteria for health equity.
āIn Finland, you do not get admitted to specialist-level services if you donāt have mental disorders at all or [have only] mild disorders and problems,ā she said. āPrimary-level services are available for needs related to milder disorders and psychosocial difficulties.ā
She said the gender-referred youth in the new study were much more likely than matched controls to have a history of severe mental disorders, often dating back some years before they reached the gender clinic.
āThus, many developed feelings of gender dysphoria in the context of severe disorders,ā she said.
āSevere mental disorders during adolescence generally have potential to complicate identity development. It rather seems that feelings of gender dysphoria are sometimes secondary to severe mental disorders.ā
If it were the other way around, and the mental disorders were secondary to the dysphoria, those disorders would be āexpected to subside with medical gender reassignmentā, according to the Dutch treatment protocol adopted internationally, she said.
But this did not happen in the new Finnish study.
Instead, the need for specialist psychiatric servicesāand therefore the scale of serious mental disordersāincreased after medical transition, as the study by Professor Kaltiala and her colleagues reported.

Among MtF adolescent patients, mental health problems rose from 10% before gender reassignment to 61% after; among FtM patients, from 22% before to 55% after.

This peaked me more than any other single incident.
The man pictured, āGabrielleā Darone, spent 9 months simulating a pregnancy, including feigned morning sickness and the wearing of a fake belly, with the intention of play-acting the loss of the imaginary baby. He also joined a support group for grieving mothers who had lost children, seeking validation and āsupportā for his planned āstillbirth.ā
He even went so far as to rent a machine that simulated contractions, and bought a plastic ābabyā which he inserted into his rectum and then āgave birth to.ā Afterwards, he took two weeks off from work to āgrieve.ā
Women who objected to his presence in the group - women who had actually lost children - were kicked out so that this man could feel supported in his game of āletās pretend.ā Their very real grief was considered less important than this manās sexual fantasies.
To top it all off, he did all of this in the house he still shared with his unconsenting soon-to-be-ex-wife and their minor children. He even roped his 7 year old into taking āmaternity pictures.ā
Mr. Darone also convinced his doctors to provide him with drugs to induce lactation. He asked the members of an online breastfeeding group heād joined if any of them would be willing to let him
ābreastfeedā - that is, sexually assault - their babies, and attempted to donate the chemical-laced sludge he pumped out of his moobs to āother mothers.ā
These men have proven over and over again that there is no aspect of womenās pain that they will not twist into a prop for their sickening deviancy, from rape to oppression to sexual objectification.
Even the loss of a child in the womb is fair game to them: a perverted, selfish, hyper-sexualized game of make-believe that must always take priority over the real pain and real needs of real women.

When a society begins to blur the line between biological fact and self-perception, it risks drifting into a moral and intellectual fog. A birth, once the most natural and biologically grounded act, is now reframed through the lens of identity politics, where language is altered and reality is redefined to fit ideology. The question is not whether someone can give birth, but whether we are ready to reshape the very foundations of science, ethics, and human understanding to accommodate temporary constructs. In the pursuit of progress, we must not lose the courage to ask, at what cost, and to what end?

The key point is that, when it comes to either mosaicism or ovotestes, it requires a case-by-case analysis to understand the sex development path. One reproductive pathway will be more dominant, and so these people are not hermaphrodites or indeterminant.

There is no brain scan that can determine whether an individual is transgender.
Brain imaging studies do not detect individual differences; they compare group averages. And studies involving transgender-identified participants often fail to control for key confounding variables, such as cross-sex hormone use and same-sex attraction.
In studies claiming to find cross-sex brain features in transgender groups, the effect is overwhelmingly driven by the inclusion of same-sex attracted peopleāwhose average brain structures differ slightly from those of heterosexual peers.
This is significant because, especially in earlier research, those who identified as transgender were often gay.
These early studies received widespread media attention and helped fuel the narrative that transgender people, like gay people, are āborn that way.ā
That narrative is falseāyet these flawed studies continue to be cited in legal briefs and medical guidance as supposed evidence that being transgender is a biological condition.
More rigorous studies that controlled for sexual orientation and hormone use found no evidence of cross-sex brain structures in transgender-identified participants. Their brains matched their biological sex.
These findings are largely ignoredābecause they undermine the politically useful belief that transgender identity is rooted in biology.
