What's likely to happen to Mensur Suljovic? Suljovic caused a storm in Basel with his antics against Ross Smith and his post-match comments, since apologising for both. Against Smith he whipped up the crowd into a frenzy, seemingly encouraging jeers, whistles and boos, particularly whilst Smith was throwing darts at double to win the contest. After the match, he made an allegedly sexist comment about women: "Women, women - they're always complaining, sorry. Sorry, you don't do that. I fully accept him [Smith] as one of the very best darts players." These comments were translated from German. The PDC confirmed in a statement that 'the matter on stage and interview has now been referred to the Darts Regulation Authority'. Reading the DRA's rules under 'Code of Conduct' there are a few Suljovic could fall foul to. Regarding his comment about women, rule 3.4: - No person bound by the DRA Rules shall do anything which is likely to intimidate, offend, insult, humiliate or discriminate against any other person on the grounds of disability, religion, race, colour or national or ethnic origin, sex or sexual orientation. Regarding his actions on stage, rule 3.6 & 3.13: - Each person bound by the DRA Rules shall participate in all Darts Events in a fair and sporting manner and shall co-operate with the DRA, PDC, PDPA, WDF and any other Affiliated Organisation or Promoter to promote and develop the sport of darts. - All persons bound by the DRA Rules and Guests will desist from any behaviour which may reasonably be construed as gamesmanship before, during or after any Match at any Darts Event. Suljovic was also involved in a controversial match at the World Championship against Joe Cullen with Cullen labelling Suljovic's antics as 'cheating' afterwards. The DRA did not publish anything on their website to suggest he was in any way punished following this match. If found guilty for breaching rules of gamesmanship, the seriousness could be deemed as either 'Non-Minor Misconduct' or 'Serious Misconduct'. My personal belief is that if found guilty, it would be considered 'Non-Minor Misconduct'. If found guilty of 'Homophobic or discriminatory behaviour' this would be considered 'Serious Misconduct' according to the DRA's 'Offences Category Guide' in their rule book. Regarding his potential sanction, the DRA could impose one or more of the following if found guilty: 18.1.1 temporary Suspension for a period fixed in time or by reference to particular events; 18.1.2 permanent Suspension (with or without the possibility of reinstatement, which may be conditional); 18.1.3 a fine; 18.1.4 the withholding of all or a proportion or any prize money earned from a Darts Event; 18.1.5 a reprimand or censure in respect of conduct; 18.1.6 a suspended sanction (being a sanction which is only invoked in the event that the person concerned is found to have committed another act of Misconduct or breach of the Rules within a stated time of the date of the decision, whether or not the further offence took place before the decision); 18.1.7 such other sanction(s) as the Disciplinary Committee or the Appeals Committee (as the case may be) shall see fit in all of the circumstances of the case. Suljovic has only had one previous sanction according to the DRA's website (cases only go back to 2020): - 27/03/22 | Failure to mark | £200 fine and formal warning Having browsed previous DRA cases and subsequent punishments, I believe the likely punishment for Suljovic if found guilty are likely to be one, or both, of the following: - a formal reprimand/warning - a fine ranging between £100-£500 I think any suspension (as some have called for), even if suspended, is highly unlikely. #Darts #MensurSuljovic
