We sat down with Eric Pan, founder of Seeed Studio (@seeedstudio), the Shenzhen makers hub that manufactures Hugging Face (@huggingface) 's Microduck. Worth a read for any hardware founder with Shenzhen on the roadmap.
A few things worth knowing:
1. Microduck's prototype was built on Seeed's open-source hardware. Pollen Robotics (@pollenrobotics) had been a Seeed customer for years before Hugging Face acquired it.
2. Most Silicon Valley hardware waves you can name have run through Seeed's supply chain.
3. Eric's first piece of advice to founders arriving in Shenzhen: don't spend your energy rebuilding hardware from scratch. The core thing to learn is what you don't have to build.

The newest robotaxi on Bay Area streets runs American software on a Chinese body.
@Waymo calls it the Ojai. It went into paid service this summer in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix, the first of Waymo’s 6th-generation fleet. The van is built by @ZeekrGlobal, a brand owned by China’s Geely, assembled in Ningbo and shipped to Arizona. Only there does Waymo add its own kit: 13 cameras, six radars, four lidar. Around 300 are on the road now, with thousands more expected by year end.
Here’s where it gets odd. Two months ago the Commerce Department blocked Polestar, another Geely brand, from selling in the US from the 2027 model year.
Same parent company. The Zeekr body rolls through anyway, because it lands stripped of the connected-vehicle tech that got Polestar banned. Waymo supplies the brain.
The vehicle was built to a brief. @GeekParkHQ’s reporting: Waymo approached Geely around 2019 and ran a global tender in 2021, which Geely won. The ask was plain. A big cabin, and enough room that a rider holding an armful of grocery bags can walk straight on. Geely’s European studio shortened the front overhang, pushed the dashboard forward, and gave it a capsule shape with sliding doors.
One more detail. It used to be called the Zeekr RT. Waymo renamed it Ojai, after a town near LA, and the car greets riders with “oh hi.” The stated reason: American riders don’t know the Zeekr name.
Geely sold 3.02 million cars in 2025, tenth in the world. It also owns Volvo and holds 9.69% of the company that owns Mercedes-Benz.
