Here we are, kids!
I think we found a core truth behind Sony's real reason for ending physical discs. It's about patents expiring. They want their 30% 3rd party cut protection digital has, because they are losing the 15% disc licensing fees. How does this developing news make you feel?

SONY, I THINK YOUR OWN ARGUMENT JUST COLLAPSED. Nobody is claiming that buying a copy of a game means I own the copyright to the game. "That has never been the argument." If I buy a movie on Blu-ray, I don't own the movie studio's intellectual property. "I own MY COPY." If I buy an album on CD, I don't own the artist's music or the record label's copyright. "I own MY COPY." Millions of people can own separate copies of the exact same movie, album, book or game at the same time. We have understood this for generations. Apparently everyone but you! And when I own that physical copy, I can put it into compatible hardware and use it. The studio doesn't suddenly get to argue that ownership is impossible because somebody else bought the same movie too. So why should a video game suddenly be different just because the delivery mechanism changed from a plastic disc to digital data? That is where Sony's reported legal argument loses me. I'm not claiming I own Resident Evil. I'm claiming I paid for MY COPY of Resident Evil. Those are two completely different things. And Xbox just made this argument even harder for @Sony to defend. Microsoft has demonstrated that a physical game can be tied to an individualized digital entitlement. They don't have to hand the customer the copyright. They don't have to give one person exclusive ownership of the game. They simply have to recognize that THIS consumer paid for THIS entitlement to access THIS game. Millions of people can each possess their own entitlement to the same copyrighted work. "Of course they can." Sony already assigns digital licenses to millions of PlayStation accounts every day. So the question was never whether the technology exists. The question is what rights the consumer receives after Sony puts the word BUY on the screen and takes their money. Here is the distinction that matters: I OWN MY COPY. I DO NOT OWN THE COPYRIGHT. Movie studios understand that. Record labels understand that. Book publishers understand that. Physical video games have worked that way for decades. What makes you any different, @Sony? Digital distribution should not magically erase that concept simply because the corporation has more technical control over the transaction. And if the customer pays full price while receiving fewer rights and less control, I think consumers have every right to ask who actually benefits from that arrangement. Sony doesn't need to give me ownership of its intellectual property. Sony needs to explain why paying full price for my copy should give Sony more control over what I purchased simply because that copy arrived as bits instead of on a disc. And Xbox has now demonstrated that individualized digital entitlements are absolutely possible. The movie and music industries have demonstrated the underlying principle for generations. Sony companies themselves sell movies and music on physical media that consumers can buy, take home and play whenever they want on compatible equipment. So please explain why video games should suddenly be treated differently. That makes the legal argument much more difficult to defend. That's the conversation I think Sony needs to answer. @PlayStation @Sony @Xbox @Microsoft @Blaze2KX @Aztecross #PlayStation #Sony #Xbox #DigitalOwnership #ConsumerRights #GamePreservation #PhysicalMedia #DigitalGames #NoDiscNoBuy 🎯If you like this content, follow. EXACTLY! When someone bought Journey's Escape for Atari back in the 1980s, they never laid claim to the band's catalog. And there were no EULAs, No "licenses"... WE OWNED THE GAME!

Except we are retaining ownership of the digital copy. They’re trying to confuse the issue with saying we claim ownership of the IP itself. Such scumbags. It’s like saying we own an original Rembrandt when we buy a copy from Hobby Lobby. I hope they lose everything.

The Church of the Digital Dickheads (A.K.A. Sony shills & simps) won't admit the parallel until they have to re-buy GTA6 bc "music rights"... Don't believe the hype
Nope, you’re wrong. Maybe do a little research and youll see why those movies were removed and it want Sony.

And the World Record for fake-ass gamer thot goes to..... @MADkurious

Bad faith argument, or blatant stupidity? You decide...
Where is the outrage for this? This is pushing towards a digital future as well. Also...have they explained what happens if you give the disc to someone else?
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Xbox adds digital benefits like Play Anywhere and cloud gaming to supported physical discs without changing how they work or preventing resale/gifting. The digital entitlement transfers with the disc to the new owner. news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/08/… windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/xb…

Blocked so as to not be forced to hear the truth. Sony has just proven that they can do anything they please with their products. Removing purchased (as opposed to "rented") movies should also constitute same breach, but @TheLastRonin714 was defending Sony on that, so...
To all you digital clowns who believe Sony can disable my disc drive at their discretion: Legally, removing an advertised core feature from a purchased product would constitute a breach of contract, false advertising, and a violation of express warranty obligations. Intentionally disabling the disc drive through a software update would likely result in immediate class-action litigation worldwide.

shills be blocking
This is gonna be dynamite!!!

At least with digital games, they're not stuck on older hardware. Your library can move with you.

Now the shills are only allowing echo chamber comments... But WE'RE the ones losing the battle? Pull the other leg ...

en.gamegpu.com/news/igry/sbo… A PlayStation 5 owner faced a 30 minute lockout from a digital copy of Ghost of Yotei. The console required a lengthy network license verification process to start the game. Such issues occur due to rights verification on secondary devices. During server or internet outages launching any purchased digital games becomes completely blocked. Physical discs protect from these errors but Sony will stop making them in January 2028. In the future players will depend entirely on company online servers. #PlayStation #PS5 #GhostOfYotei #PSN #bug #games #news

THIS!
To the folks still defending Sony's pathetic decision to remove physical media from their production, here's a solid reminder why I will never support and you shouldn't either. I had to literally sue Playstation because my OG account was wrongfully banned and it took me 3 years to get it back. All of my licenses and games I paid for digitally were gone. $3,000 worth of items gone due to something that was never my fault in the first place. It took me fighting with support and getting a lawyer involved and taking them to court to get them to reverse the decision. nitter.cf/PrimitiveAK/status/140…

Say what you want about PlayStation but they're coming with the GAMES

Ladies, Gentlemen, and those who identify otherwise, I present the definition of a corporate whore ...
The two things have nothing to do with each other. If you dont care about early access then you can simply access it when everybody else does.

Naw, it quotes the Consumer Protection Commissioner, who says the EU won’t pass new laws forcing physical discs. It completely ignores EU antitrust law (competition rules), which is WAY stronger. Under these rules, the EU Commission can investigate Sony for abusing its monopoly and order remedies so it's like looking at it from a weak side
