"$100 million settlement fund for Poudre River Improvement! We got the best outcome for the river that we could get. We could have fought ‘til the bitter end in court, with risk of losing and getting absolutely nothing.”--Gary Wockner of Save The Poudre denverpost.com/2025/03/05/co…

Our SAVE THE POUDRE program wants everyone to know we are still DEEPLY engaged and you'll be hearing more from us about this in the next days/weeks. The letter the City of Fort Collins received from the Army Corps is very 'damming' and is here: savethepoudre.org/wp-content… coloradosun.com/2026/10/14/f…

I took a position of "YES on Prop 137." This article does not change my vote, but it's complex, and I really don't understand all of this even though I'm maybe more engaged around these issues than the average voter.

"Ecological restoration may be pointless if it's not coupled with efforts to Protect and Restore the flow of water in rivers. Without water, there's no ecology to restore." -- Gary Wockner

We are pioneering and testing the use of AI in river protection. Several use cases moving forward, and many more ideas in the works! Right now, we are using @AnthropicAI's @claudeai -- it is continually learning about our mission and work, and becoming more informed and useful every day. We are continuing to learn how best to train and feed it as well. Wish we had the resources to match our ambitions! Our most recent test: savetheworldsrivers.org/save…

"As I reflect on our 15-year battle over the Colorado River-draining Gross Dam expansion in Boulder County, Colorado, I believe that there is no comparison between our loss and what would have been lost had we not tried at all." -- Gary Wockner

Why Don't We Do "On-The-Ground Ecological Restoration?" We often get asked by the public and donors why we focus on fighting against proposed new dams and diversions, and supporting Rights of Nature for Rivers, instead of on-the-ground "ecological restoration." Here's the answer: First, we certainly agree that on-the-ground ecological restoration is very important. Our watersheds in Colorado and across the American Southwest have been severely degraded and much (MUCH!) on-the-ground ecological restoration needs to occur. Second, we acknowledge that supporting groups that do ecological restoration is important, and seeing people working in our rivers -- rebuilding wetlands, expanding floodplains, builder beaver dam analogs, etc. -- is a powerful visual as well as a powerful way to engage the public, media, and the membership of NGOs in the support of rivers. Third, in addition to doing ecological restoration, we believe our work must also be funded and supported because we actually PROTECT THE FLOW OF WATER IN RIVERS by working to stop proposed new dams and diversions, and by supporting the legal Rights of Rivers to exist. Ecological restoration may be pointless if it's not coupled with efforts to Protect and Restore the flow of water in rivers. Without water, there's no ecology to restore. Finally, we fully realize our work is confrontational and controversial, while ecological restoration is collaborative and not controversial. But, we are fully informed about how water law in Colorado and across the American Southwest is literally designed to get every single drop of water out of rivers and drain our rivers bone dry. That law is supported by the entire political and economic apparatus as well. There are well over 25 proposed new dams and diversions -- with more coming -- in Colorado and across the American Southwest (listed on our website here: savethecolorado.org/campaign…). Someone needs to do everything possible to address that threat. Working together -- ecological restoration + river protection -- we may be able to make a difference in the future of rivers. We believe rivers have a right to exist, flow, and thrive. We believe rivers are ALIVE, and we will continue to fight to protect them.

Look up! ✨ Golden Gate Canyon State Park is now Colorado’s first Urban Night Sky Place. Protecting our dark skies is important for wildlife and gives Coloradans a chance to see more mesmerizing night stars. Colorado’s dark skies are one of our most incredible wild spaces, and now you can see it better than ever before at Golden Gate Canyon State Park.
