wellness information that can trigger a medical pathway without itself being a medical diagnosis
Replying to @Google
@Google is walking the increasingly thin line between wellness and medicine.
Pixel Watch can now give users trends in blood pressure and insulin resistance without a cuff or blood draw.
It infers them from longitudinal sensor data rather than directly measuring either in the conventional clinical sense.
The interesting part is what happens next.
Google is explicit that these are wellness insights, not clinical readings, diagnostic screening or something you should use to change medication.
But if your watch tells you your blood pressure or insulin resistance trend is worsening, the obvious next step may be to confirm it clinically and potentially start a conversation about diagnosis or treatment.
That makes the boundary fascinating: wellness information that can trigger a medical pathway without itself being a medical diagnosis.
Wearables are getting increasingly close to the medical-device boundary while becoming increasingly explicit about saying they have not crossed it.
And the FDA's latest guidance helps make that 'fine line walking' possible. It explicitly allows some non-invasive wearables to estimate physiological parameters such as blood pressure while remaining in the general-wellness category, provided they stop short of screening, diagnosis, disease management or directing treatment
Anthropic's Claude comes out of the cloud and into the wet lab >>
Anthropic has revealed that it has been quietly operating its own molecular biology lab in the San Francisco Bay Area since the spring, bringing Claude into physical biological research rather than keeping it purely computational
The idea is to close the loop between Al and experiments. Claude can search huge biological datasets, generate hypotheses and identify promising candidates, while human scientists test whether those ideas actually work in the lab
Anthropic says the lab is focused on fundamental biology rather than simply becoming an Al drug company.
But the implications for drug discovery are obvious, particularly for biological problems that are difficult or uneconomic for traditional R&D to pursue
Longer term, Anthropic is also exploring whether Claude can direct robotic laboratory systems. For now, humans remain firmly in the loop and the company describes automated lab execution as being in its very early stages
This also puts Anthropic in an interesting position. It already works with pharma companies including Novo Nordisk and Genentech, while increasingly building more of the scientific infrastructure itself
FDA clears pregnancy wearable that moves maternal and fetal monitoring into the home
@MaraniHealth has received FDA 510(k) clearance for its M-care System, including the M•wrap wearable, clearing the way for a planned commercial launch in 2027
Worn around the abdomen, M-wrap captures fetal and maternal heart signals, allowing prescribed monitoring to take place at home rather than requiring every session in hospital or clinic
Women can see average heart-rate results and record fetal movements in the app, while clinicians remotely receive the full heart tracings through a provider portal. So this is not simply data being handed back to the patient
The system is designed to complement routine prenatal and emergency care. That could be particularly useful in the US, where one in three counties is classified as a maternity care desert and more than half have no hospital providing labour and delivery services
Marani was founded in collaboration with Mayo Clinic and is initially targeting health systems, providers and health plans. It is also an interesting example of women's health technology moving beyond consumer tracking towards clinically integrated care that can change where healthcare is delivered
950 Claude agents spent 21 hours searching 200,000+ reverse transcriptases and surfaced a previously uncharacterised enzyme system in bacteriophages.
What makes it notable is that the system has CRISPR-like repeat arrays, the kind of architecture that can make biological systems programmable.
That raises the possibility it could eventually become a useful new molecular biology or gene-engineering tool.
But we are nowhere near calling it “the next CRISPR” yet. Humans did the lab work, the system’s biological function is still unknown, and the finding is currently a preprint.
For me now, it’s about the power of AI to search huge biological spaces and finding genuinely interesting shit to test.
AI could help predict where brain cancer will return before it appears on an MRI.
Researchers used FastGlioma to analyse tissue from the edges of glioblastoma tumours during surgery.
In 80 patients, the AI-derived measure of tumour infiltration was the strongest individual predictor of where recurrence later occurred.
The longer-term idea is powerful > identify high-risk areas during the original surgery, then potentially remove more tissue or target those areas with radiation or local drugs.
Interesting to see AI moving from prediction to intervention
