USA. A Mexican restaurant. We had not yet ordered anything, and the food was already arriving. Chips. Salsa. Unrequested. Free. I stopped the waiter. "We have not earned these." "They just come with the table, man." They come with the TABLE. In my land, hospitality is a debt. Every gift creates an obligation, weighed carefully, returned in the proper season with interest of feeling. Here, the gift arrives before you have even proven you can pay for dinner. This is not an appetizer. This is a declaration: we trust you. Eat. I ate with the gravity the moment deserved. And then — I must report this calmly — the basket emptied, and a new one appeared. "Did we…?" "Refill," the waiter said. "It's bottomless." Bottomless. They have wells of salsa. The supply lines of this nation are beyond anything my ancestors imagined. My friend warned me. "Don't fill up on chips, dude." Too late. I had accepted three baskets. Honor demanded each one be finished — an unfinished gift is an insult. By the time my actual food arrived, I was a ruined man. I was not hungry. I was not comfortable. I had been defeated by a courtesy. Generosity that arrives before the request cannot be repaid. It can only be survived. I know the rule now. I have made my peace with the basket. One basket. Two at the most. Who am I deceiving. There is no number of baskets I would refuse. The trust of a nation is in that salsa, and I intend to honor all of it.

The “Everyone is 12 now” theory truly is foundational for our times.

A source sent me this photo of Kash Patel’s customized Nike’s. The shoes feature a number 9 (Patel is the 9th FBI director), a Punisher skull (a vigilante killer from Marvel Comics), and his personal logo (K$H). The backs of the shoes show the FBI motto: "Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity". Patel was photographed wearing them at an FBI Academy event that featured UFC fighters.

Incredible how much anxiety there is over the size of deficits and the debt in advanced economies, and also zero willingness to even entertain higher taxes.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Murkowski’s vote. It contains, in one action, so much that defines our pathetic political moment: Selfishness: I’m taking care of me and mine, the rest of you can pound sand; Lack of accountability: I know the bill is bad, hopefully someone else will fix it; Cowardice: I’m scared of Trump and his voters and need to go-along to get along with my GOP colleagues; Moral rot: I know the difference between right and wrong, and actively chose wrong.

In case you didn’t think the brain drain would happen - France and the EU are now actively recruiting US-based scientists disillusioned by funding cuts and political interference by launching a “Choose Europe for Science” campaign.

This is my light at the end of the tunnel. We will have a chance to rebuild, and it will all be so messed up and gutted we can do better.
whatever dem wins in 2028, is going to have to pretty much just be a technocrat for their first couple years in office. they're going to have to pretty much spend every second of every day just repealing and fixing the entire federal government.

Bikeshare Beat: After an unprecedented surge in ridership in 2024, CaBi is the fastest-growing bikesharing system in the country, and second-busiest service to New York City’s Citibike. Plus, Lime breaks its own ridership record: ggwash.org/view/98229/bikesh…

Whole thread is full of silly or cliche complaints and tropes of DC. But complaining about nightlife and saying the people are strange while taking a picture in front of CRYSTAL CITY gentleman’s club is hilarious. Just so obtuse or engagement farming…
Hanging out in DC. This is a weird city. It’s walkable & the architecture is beautiful but the people are WEIRD Everyone is single & I have been tracking people & listening to their conversations and I haven’t heard a single one that wasn’t about work or failed tinder dates

End of 2024 goal may be to hit up this whole list.
Looking to do a best DC sandwich shop poll thread (at least 2-3 threads necessary) soon. Here's preliminary list What's missing? Would exclude chicken sandwich, burger, and perhaps controversially bagel shops (though I could be convinced otherwise), and places that aren't really sandwich shops but have some good sandwiches
