Just published -- the largest and most thorough annotated bibliography on ultra-processed foods and the NOVA classification system known to humankind! By yours truly, for the @OUPAcademic Bibliographies on Food Studies. academic.oup.com/reference/6…

EA is not a narrow cult, it's a wide-tent movement that includes a BUNCH of narrow cults. Some of them give away all their money to save children in the developing world, some give kidneys to strangers, some create bizarre scenarios about ASI and interstellar biodomes.
I normally don't bring up the malaria bed net stuff in responses to criticisms of EA's current influence, but if people are going to be listing off all the bads like "Harry Potter fanfic" etc. I'd like it to at least also be noted that the movement has prevented a major war's worth of deaths.

My hope is that this bibliography offers a balanced and useful portrait of the state of the evidence. I come away pretty unconvinced that all UPFs are bad, but also firmly convinced that we should work hard to promote access to healthy and affordable minimally processed foods.

I've seen lots of responses that counter Kat's claim here, but haven't seen anyone mention that most suburbanites who watch local TV news thinks every US city is a violent hellscape.
Interesting question— but if, like me, you understand woke as a cultural rather than political phenomenon, I think the answer is that no equivalent is possible? Republicans since 2008 just haven’t had the power to inflict the kind of damage it would be galling to see laughed off

What influences people to adopt (or not adopt) plant-based meat alternatives? A range of micro-, meso-, and macro-level factors all play a role. Resistance at any level makes it tough, but resistance across all three makes it basically impossible. 3/

Ultimately, consumers will embrace food technology IF AND ONLY IF: benefits are clear, downsides addressed, social networks supportive, and access is easy and affordable. A big challenge for plant-based meats, but possible with hard work across the value chain! 4/4

Hidden on page 744 of the farm bill the House Agriculture Committee passed Thursday is a provision that would condemn millions of pigs to a lifetime in gestation crates. Rebranded the 'Save Our Bacon Act,' it's a pork-industry play to wipe out every state law banning the sale of pork from crated pigs — laws the conservative Supreme Court upheld in 2023. Over 85% of Democrats and Republicans oppose these crates. Voters have backed ballot measures to ban them in state after state. The pork industry knows it can't win a straight vote on this. So it's burying the provision in an 800-page bill and hoping no one notices. Contact your senators and representative today and tell them: oppose the farm bill unless the Save Our Bacon Act is stripped out. You can reach them at senate.gov and house.gov — it takes two minutes and it matters.

Just got back reviews for a comprehensive annotated bibliography on "Ultra-Processed Foods" I was invited to write for Oxford. Paraphrasing: R1: "The author is biased -- he clearly supports the UPF concept." R2: "The author is biased -- he clearly opposes the UPF concept."
