𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝘀! Looking back at last summer, @GamerPieFest stood out. And the "𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘶𝘴!" meme in the background of our #translation and #localization panel discussion was not selected randomly. It's an epitome of what can go wrong when game localization is mismanaged, naturally raising the question: 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘱𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘢 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘨𝘰𝘰𝘥? We discussed this and much more with Pavel Skoták and Michal Vojkůvka in Brno at the end of August during the 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗶𝗲 𝗡𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹. The whole event was a pleasure, and I'm looking forward to next year already! As for the meme itself, "𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘶𝘴" is based on a poorly translated phrase from the opening cutscene of the Japanese video game Zero Wing. The phrase first appeared on the European release of the 1991 Sega Mega Drive conversion of the 1989 Japanese arcade game.
