Grateful for the opportunity to sit down with @OmahaMBB Head Coach @CoachCrutchUNO while covering the Mavericks for @thecenterhub_bb this season. Coach Crutchfield has built something special at Omaha, taking a program that had never reached the NCAA Tournament at the Division I level and breaking through with its first appearance in 2025. During our conversation, we discussed what it takes to build upon that success, the challenges of sustaining a winning culture in today’s college basketball landscape, and how this year’s roster can establish its own identity. After speaking with Coach Crutchfield, it is clear that Omaha has assembled an intriguing combination of returning experience and new talent. The Mavericks have size, physicality, and versatility throughout the roster, while returning players who understand the standards that have been established within the program. One of the biggest storylines entering the season is the return of Isaac Ondekane. After starting throughout Omaha’s NCAA Tournament season before missing all of last year due to injury, his return provides the Mavericks with an experienced and physical presence in the frontcourt. Grant Stubblefield is another name I believe will be instrumental to Omaha’s success this season. He led the Mavericks in both assists and steals last year while shooting over 52% from the field, and now enters his senior season with an opportunity to take another step as both a player and leader. The newcomers also make this team particularly interesting. Chris Dockery brings proven Summit League experience, size, physicality, and rebounding after playing at Kansas City, while Cahmai Crosby provides another experienced guard with the ability to shoot, create, and potentially take on a larger offensive role than he had at North Texas. Those four players are names I will be watching closely throughout the season and could ultimately determine just how high the ceiling is for this Omaha team. What makes the Mavericks particularly interesting is that there are multiple avenues for improvement. Omaha was one of the better offensive-rebounding teams in the country last season and shot 53% from inside the arc, but there is room for this group to become more connected offensively and take a significant step defensively. This roster has the pieces to compete near the top of the Summit League and put Omaha back into the postseason conversation. One thing is certain: Coach Crutchfield has already shown that Omaha can reach the NCAA Tournament. The next challenge is turning that breakthrough into sustained success, and this year’s group has an opportunity to continue pushing the program forward
