If you are in Vegas and don’t want to get hacked this week.
Phone:
•Turn off WiFi and Bluetooth entirely, use cellular data only. Rogue APs and Bluetooth exploits are half the “fun” for attackers that week.
•Disable AirDrop/file sharing discovery.
•Don’t plug into any public USB charging port or unknown cable — use your own wall charger or a “USB condom” (data-blocker adapter) if you must use a public port.
•Make sure OS is fully updated before you got there (too late now if not, but update anyway).
•Turn off auto-join for WiFi networks.
Laptop:
•Don’t connect to any conference WiFi or hotel WiFi without a VPN at minimum — ideally just tether to your phone’s hotspot instead.
•Full disk encryption on (FileVault/BitLocker), screen lock with a real password, not just a PIN.
•Disable file sharing, AirDrop, network discovery.
•Firewall on, block incoming connections.
•If you’re paranoid (reasonably so, there), don’t do any sensitive logins (banking, betting accounts) on hotel/conference networks even with VPN — save that for cellular data.

Sad day. But shit happens. When I first moved to Vegas in 2008 there was probably at least 20 unique books in town and another 15 if you flew to Reno or drove to Laughlin/primm/mesquite. I have no idea what the number is today but I’d guess around 10. There might even be a few states where you have more variety than Nevada since they block the PMs, etc. Anyway, good to hear most of the WG talent has found new homes.
