Defying Foreign Meddling: Brazilians Rally Behind Sovereignty, Humanity, and Re-Elect Lula da Silva
In an era shadowed by global hegemony, the continuing tragedy in Gaza, and relentless attempts by imperialist powers to coerce the world back into a rigid bipolar mould, one leader has consistently stood tall on the global stage: Brazil’s President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
When United States President Donald Trump floated reckless proposals regarding the future and governance of Gaza,Lula da Silva served as a vital voice of reason and moral clarity. Addressing the matter directly, Lula remarked: "Where would Palestinians live? This is something incomprehensible to any human being. Palestinians are the ones who need to take care of Gaza."
Throughout his time in office and across the campaign trail, Lula has refused to stay silent on the plight of the Palestinian people. He forcefully reminded the international community: "We cannot remain indifferent to the genocide carried out by Israel in Gaza, the indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians, and the use of hunger as a weapon of war."
He has equally laid bare the institutional paralysis of the international system, decrying the inaction of bodies like the United Nations: "Who can accept the genocide that has been going on in the Gaza Strip for so long?" he asked pointing out that institutions like the UN have effectively ceased working when it comes to defending innocent lives.
When Washington proposed self-styled peace frameworks aimed at carving up territories amongst allies without local self-determination, Lula pushed back unequivocally. He insisted that any legitimate peace mechanism must be rooted in Palestinian participation, declaring: "Any path that does not include Palestinians cannot be considered a peace committee." He dismissed schemes to displace populations as fundamentally unconscionable and issued a stern warning against unilateral international overreach.
Similarly, when Washington attempted to undermine Venezuelan sovereignty through aggressive extraterritorial actions targeting President Nicolás Maduro, Lula condemned such measures unreservedly, labelling them a flagrant breach of international law and a gross abuse of power.
Addressing Washington's hawkish posturing, Lula reminded Trump of a basic democratic reality: he was elected to govern the United States, not to rule the planet. As Lula put it: "The United States needs the world too. It should live in harmony with Brazil, Mexico, and China. No one can live on bravado all the time, making threats all the time."
Determined to meddle across Latin America, external forces attempted to sow domestic discord within Brazil to estrange the populace from their government. When political posturing failed, Washington weaponised punitive trade tariffs against Brazil, seeking to exert undue leverage over the judicial proceedings surrounding former President Jair Bolsonaro.Lula firmly resisted this economic coercion, rejecting the notion that Brazil could be treated like a tin-pot republic and warning foreign powers against meddling in sovereign democratic processes.
In a further bid to unseat Lula, external backing shifted heavily towards the Bolsonaro dynasty, throwing full support behind Flávio Bolsonaro.
Yet, when it mattered most, the Brazilian people proved where their true allegiance lies. Refusing to succumb to foreign coercion, economic blackmail, or imperialist pressure, Brazilians chose national dignity and solidarity over external dictate. Yesterday, voters across the nation delivered a resounding verdict at the ballot box, defying foreign interference to hand Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva a historic victory, polling 64,256,232 (51.79%) against Bolsonaro’s 59,826,041 (48.21%)
The defining takeaway of this election is unequivocal: the Brazilian people know that no foreign power, self-serving ally,or external intimidation will ever safeguard their welfare; only their own collective will can. They stood their ground, defended their sovereignty, and chose leadership rooted in justice, compassion, and human dignity.
Warmest congratulations to the resilient people of Brazil, and congratulations to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

EITI Executive Director Receives NNPC Ltd’s 2025 AFS, Lauds Company's Progress
Mark Robinson, the Executive Director of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), a global watchdog for the promotion of transparency and accountability in the oil, gas and mining sectors, has received NNPC Ltd’s 2025 Audited Financial Statement on the sidelines of the 2026 EITI Global Conference in Brussels, Belgium, on Friday, 9 October 2026.
Robinson, who received the document from Murjanatu Gamawa, NNPC Ltd’s Head, Global Compliance, commended the Company for publishing its Anti-Corruption Policy, which includes requirements for the disclosure of politically exposed persons and beneficial ownership. He noted that the Company’s progress offers lessons for other national oil companies as the EITI works to bring more of them into its membership.
On her part, Gamawa said the Company’s engagement with the EITI informed its decision to publish its AFS. She added that NNPC Limited seeks continuous partnership with the EITI focused on strengthening corporate governance and building credibility with investors, stakeholders and the public.
Both parties agreed to hold regular engagements and to explore peer learning between NNPC Ltd and other national oil companies.
The presentation reflects the level of disclosure NNPC Ltd. maintains as a global energy company accountable to investors, partners and the Nigerian public.

It was a pleasure meeting with you recently at the @nnpclimited Stakeholder engagement.
I commend the management and staff of NNPC Limited for the commendable initiative of promoting openness, transparency and institutional accountability under the current leadership. At a time when public institutions are increasingly judged not only by what they do but also by how transparently they communicate their performance, initiatives such as the disclosure of their financial reports are important in strengthening public confidence and improving stakeholder understanding.
I must admit that I am not particularly surprised by the financial performance and turnover being reported by NNPC Limited. The company has, over time, undergone significant institutional and commercial repositioning, with a stronger emphasis on efficiency, productivity, accountability and commercial viability.
The emerging results suggest that a more commercially driven NNPC Limited is capable of operating with greater discipline while still retaining its strategic responsibility to the Nigerian state.
The transformation of NNPC Limited should therefore be viewed beyond the prism of revenue figures. Its real significance lies in the evolution of a national energy company that is increasingly expected to compete, invest, create value, attract capital and operate according to the principles of sound corporate governance.
Of course, with greater performance comes greater public expectation. Nigerians will continue to look towards NNPC Limited not only for strong financial results but also for a more visible and impactful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) footprint. The expectation is that the company's growing commercial strength will increasingly translate into meaningful interventions in host communities, education, healthcare, youth empowerment, and other areas of national development.
To be fair, NNPC Limited has continued to make interventions in these areas. However, given the strategic importance of the company to Nigeria's economy and energy security, there is always scope to deepen these interventions and, perhaps more importantly, communicate them more effectively to the Nigerian public.
A stronger NNPC Limited should not merely be measured by how much it earns, but by how effectively it converts its strategic position in Nigeria's energy sector into sustainable value for the nation.

Last Thursday, I was privileged to be in the midst of Nigeria’s legal community at the Body of Benchers Complex to celebrate the 80th birthday of one of the nation’s legal icons, Chief Godwin Kanu Agabi, SAN.
The Learned Silk has distinguished himself as a puritan at the temple of justice and as a legal iroko whose wide canopy has nurtured, produced and accommodated generations of lawyers.
As a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Godwin Kanu Agabi, SAN, has made profound contributions to Nigeria’s criminal justice system and the wider legal landscape. His impact on the profession remains enduring and timeless.
Happy 80th birthday once again, Sir. May the years ahead bring you continued good health, fulfilment and many more opportunities to inspire generations.

🪖💔This is the part of the war they don’t post for likes.
A soldier still standing. IV in one hand. Bandage on the leg. Drip in the arm. Night around him. No hospital corridor. No comfort. Just the frontline and the will to stay on his feet.
🤦This is what injury looks like out here. Not a caption. A price.
He did not collapse for content.
He is holding his own treatment because the mission does not pause when one man gets hit.
🙏📿Pray for him.

An important lesson of the 21st century is that what you study does not necessarily determine what you become. Education now offers multiple pathways: mathematics can lead to science or economics, history to neuroscience, and medicine to writing. John B. Goodenough, Eric R. Kandel and Abhijit Banerjee all followed academic paths different from the fields in which they eventually earned Nobel Prizes. Nigeria’s Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie similarly moved from medicine to communication and political science before becoming a celebrated writer. The lesson is not that education is unimportant. Rather, education should be a foundation, not a prison. It gives us knowledge, discipline and ways of thinking, but today’s challenges increasingly cross disciplinary boundaries. Poverty, climate change and artificial intelligence, for instance, require economic, political, scientific, technological and social perspectives. Youth should therefore take their education seriously without assuming their first degree permanently determines their destiny. What matters progressively is what you can do with what you have learned. Success belongs to those who can cross boundaries, connect ideas and apply knowledge to real problems. What you study may shape you, but it does not have to define you. Over. AA.

ONOGWU MUHAMMED: "The Nigerian Bar Association has historically been much more than an association of lawyers gathering annually to exchange pleasantries, collect conference bags and take photographs. The Annual General Conference has, over the years, become the most significant intellectual gathering in Nigeria. It is a meeting point for eminent scholars, senior advocates, professors, judges, legislators, diplomats, security professionals, captains of industry and other persons whose experience and expertise enrich national discourse. The conference is followed not only by thousands of lawyers physically present at the venue, but by a much wider audience across Nigeria and beyond. Ideas expressed there can influence public policy, shape national conversations and, sometimes, find their way into the corridors of government. That is precisely why the choice of speakers matters. Lawyers are trained to listen. We listen to the learned and the unlearned, the professor and the apprentice, the eloquent and the incoherent because everybody deserves to be heard. The law, after all, does not confer wisdom by occupation, nor does it deprive a person of the right to speak merely because he lacks a professional qualification. But there is a difference between the constitutional freedom to speak and the institutional responsibility to provide a platform."
