By the middle of the seventeenth century, the principal Ga states of Nungua (first settlers), Ga Mashie (Accra), Osu, La and “Torman” (Tema) were all already established near the coast. Teshie was founded at the beginning of the following century. 📷: @SolomonJnr

My Teshie! ❤️
Over the years, Teshie has built a strong reputation in healthcare delivery in Ghana at large. The town has produced some of the country’s most respected health professionals including former deputy Health Ministers Hon. Gladys Norley Ashitey and Dr. @OkoeBoye . Thread - 1/14

🇬🇭⛵️: A Ghanaian tourist visiting Nubia in Egypt was surprised to discover names bearing similarities to Ga-Dangme names written on ancient walls. Among the names was “Narty,” which is similar to Nartey in Ga, and “Nene,” a name commonly associated with Ga-Dangme traditional culture. Nubia is an ancient region associated with the Nile River, covering parts of what is now southern Egypt and northern Sudan. The river Nile also holds historical and cultural significance for the Ga-Dangme people. 📷| allwehaveisnow360 #AuntieDedei

According to the oral traditions of the La people, their ancestors migrated from Bonne in south-eastern Nigeria to their present settlement. Like the other Ga-Dangme groups, they undertook this migration with their ancestral deity, La Kpa, whose spiritual significance remains deeply rooted in the history and identity of La. The traditional appellation “La Dade Kotopon” carries an important cultural meaning. Depicted in this photograph is the late La Kpa Wulomo, Nuumo Yemo Obroni VII, wearing the sacred headgear known as the Koto. Traditionally, the Koto is noted for its considerable weight and is likened to metal—“dade” in the Ga language. The expression “pon” is understood in this tradition as deriving from the Akan honorific “Obrempong,” denoting greatness, eminence and exalted status. In this context, it serves to emphasise the revered stature and spiritual greatness associated with La Kpa. Thus, “Dade Kotopon” is more than an appellation. It reflects the history, sacred traditions and cultural identity of the people of La, and the enduring reverence accorded to La Kpa across generations.

The Agbogbloshie market has historically been designated as the site for Accra’s central railway station. With the area now been cleared, this long-standing planning objective should be preserved. The redevelopment of the site presents an important opportunity to establish a modern central railway terminal and strengthen Accra’s integrated urban transport system.
