I had my FIRST job in SEO at 14, working remote for a Canadian agency mostly doing blog posts and automated link building 😅 I got my first REAL job in SEO at 16, where I was an SEO Engineer on £18k/yr ($29k/yr in 2013) after applying for one job, getting an interview and an offer the same day. I wasn't that special either! I just walked in with case studies, confidence and lingo that made the CEO's head spin sideways... Yes, the job market wasn't nearly as competitive but the SEO industry was also literally 50x smaller! If you are GOOD at SEO, it's not hard to find a good job, and we have plenty @GSEOCareers! After 6 months, a competitor (literally across the road) offered me a 33.3% increase in my salary and I walked over the next day. A few months into that and I had guest posted on @MattWoodwardUK blog (the first person he allowed to do so) which opened up the doors to my own personal clients, as well as a job offer as Head of Marketing & Strategy (£50k/yr, $81k/yr) for a small agency based in London that now has over 50 people! During my time as Head of Marketing, I got to speak to 2 universities, realize running teams is NOT for me and ran successful campaigns for several clients that gave me real perspective into white hat SEO and brand building exercises. Whilst most know me as the self employed guy, without these early on opportunities I don't think my career trajectory would have looked anything like it has! So my FIRST recommendation for anyone looking to get into this industry? Go get a job in it, dive in, let it pay the bills and see how good you really are (or can get)!
