At the GSC, freshwater mussels are raised in the Conservation Center, where they grow on host fish until old enough to be released into local streams. Lead Technician Hannah is counting three-month-old Eastern Creekshell mussels in the following photos.

Due to nearby cases of avian flu in North Carolina, some of our bird species will be moved to indoor holding spaces for their safety. They will return once the flu risk has passed. Our cassowaries and African penguins will remain viewable to the public.
