The number of Catholic priests worldwide has risen again after five years of no growth, according to statistics published by the Vatican agency Fides ahead of the 100th World Mission Sunday, which will be celebrated Sunday, Oct. 18. According to the Fides report, the total number of priests rose from 406,996 to 407,421, representing an increase of 425 compared with the previous year. The Vatican agency noted that the data comes from the Statistical Yearbook of the Church and is current as of Dec. 31, 2024. Africa recorded the largest increase with 1,676 more priests, followed by Asia with 1,065. The Americas also reversed the previous yearʼs downward trend, adding 199 priests. In contrast, Europe lost 2,483 priests over the course of the year, while Oceania recorded a decrease of 32. The overall increase is attributed to the growth in the number of diocesan priests, which reached 279,238, an increase of 496 compared with the previous count. Meanwhile, the number of religious order priests fell by 71, standing at 128,183. Despite the increase in the number of priests, the number of Catholics per priest also rose, reaching 3,491 — an increase of 38 compared with the previous year. The average number of inhabitants per priest also climbed, reaching 16,104. Fides statistics further indicated that the global Catholic population reached 1,422,144,000 as of June 30, 2024, an increase of 16.69 million over the previous year. Based on these figures, Catholics represent 17.8% of the worldʼs population. Africa saw the largest growth in the number of Catholics, with an increase of 7.58 million, followed by the Americas, with a rise of nearly 7 million. Asia added 968,000, Europe 911,000, and Oceania 239,000. While the number of priests is rising, the number of seminarians is decreasing. The number of major seminarians stood at 103,604 worldwide, a decrease of 2,891 from the previous year. Africa was the only continent to record growth, with 786 additional seminarians, whereas Asia saw a decline of 2,733, Europe 701, the Americas 227, and Oceania 16. The number of minor seminarians also decreased, falling to 94,041, which is 980 fewer than in the previous count. Africa reversed the previous yearʼs trend, adding 132, while Oceania recorded an increase of 20. In contrast, Europe lost 872, Asia 182, and the Americas 78. More: ewtnnews.com/vatican/for-the…

Feast of Saint Luke, Evangelist: according to tradition he was born to a pagan family in Antioch, and was a doctor by profession. Converted to faith in Christ, he became a cherished companion of the blessed Apostle Paul. In his Gospel he carefully recounted, as a scribe of the gentleness of Christ, everything that Jesus did and taught. Similarly, in the Acts of the Apostles he chronicled the beginnings of the life of the primitive Church as far as Saint Paul’s first dwelling in the City of Rome. Saint Luke, pray for us!

I would like to thank all those who have prayed for me in recent days. I wish to express my particular gratitude to the doctors, nurses and all the staff of the Gemelli Hospital. This experience has made me feel particularly close to all those who are living with illness or infirmity. Now that I have overcome this delicate phase I will gradually resume my activities, always with God’s help and your prayers.

Gospel of the Day (Luke 12,13-21) Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me." He replied to him, "Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?" Then he said to the crowd, "Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one's life does not consist of possessions." Then he told them a parable. "There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, 'What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?' And he said, 'This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, "Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!" But God said to him, 'You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?' Thus will it be for the one who stores up treasure for himself but is not rich in what matters to God." vaticannews.va/en/word-of-th…

Pope Leo XIV will resume his Wednesday general audience at the Vatican this week. But he will skip his usual Monday-evening-through-Tuesday-evening stay at the papal villa of Castel Gandolfo southeast of Rome. The pontiff returned to the Vatican on Saturday, four days after surgery to remove a cancerous lung nodule. The same day, Dr. Stefano Margaritora, who operated on Pope Leo on Oct. 13 at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, cleared the pope to proceed with his apostolic journey to South America in November. The next day, Oct. 18, Leo resumed praying the Sunday Angelus from the window of the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican. “Having overcome this delicate phase, as you know, I will now gradually resume my activities, always with Godʼs help and your prayers,” the pope said in his Angelus address. Louis Prevost, one of Pope Leo XIV’s brothers, expressed surprise in a Sunday interview with Fox News that Margaritora had cleared the pope’s trip. “I thought maybe theyʼd postpone that,” Prevost said. Prevost, who is receiving treatment for multiple myeloma, a form of cancer, also expressed surprise that Leo had been diagnosed with lung cancer, which had never occurred in the family. “He was the first with the lung cancer, which came out of the blue. Nobody else had that in our family that Iʼm aware of,” Prevost said. Prevost also shared that he and the pope had talked every day during his hospitalization. “Every time I talked to him or texted him [during his hospitalization], he was answering,” Prevost said. “So, I know other than during the operation and in his brief, quick recovery, he was incommunicado. But since then, almost anytime I reach out to him, he is right there.” “When we get on the phone or talk, we give each other crap, you know?” Prevost said. “We tell jokes; some are off color.” Asked how he could give the pope crap, he replied: “You tell him he’s being stupid.” More: ewtnnews.com/vatican/pope-le…

Fit Check of the Week: New White House press secretary Katie Zacharia. As VF style correspondent José Criales-Unzueta notes, Zacharia is a prominent example of the MAGA look. The aesthetic has become a signifier of the Trumpian era, likely because part of the Trump visual language is for women to look and behave in a certain anachronistic, hyperfeminine way, wearing über high heels, more makeup than anyone could ever need, and long, salon-wavy hair in a shade of blond that cannot be found anywhere in nature. Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass at noon on Friday in the room set up on the 10th floor of Gemelli Hospital, according to the Holy See Press Office. Several members of Gemelli's medical and nursing staff attended the Mass, along with members of the Vatican City State Gendarmerie Corps. "In his homily, the Pope thanked all the staff—doctors, nurses, and orderlies—for the work they do every day caring for patients in their frailty, and especially for what they have done and continue to do for him," read the statement.

The Vatican has released the first post-surgery photos of Pope Leo XIV as he continues to recover at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. In a new medical update, Dr. Luigi Carbone and Prof. Stefano Margaritora said blood tests and a chest X-ray conducted this morning “confirmed continued improvement in his overall condition.” “His post-operative recovery has progressed to the point that he can carry out normal daily activities completely independently,” the doctors added. The Pope also celebrated Mass at the hospital and personally distributed Holy Communion. Pope Leo is scheduled to pray the Angelus on Sunday, although the location has not yet been confirmed. 🙏 Please continue to pray for the Holy Father’s recovery. Discover more at ewtnnews.com
