In a post where he termed the Indian 🇮🇳 startup ecosystem as “on steroids”, @anandmahindra also referred to a recently released book by Rajan Anandan @RajanAnandan & Saurabh Srivastava: @TheSaurabhSri. The book is named “The Lift-Off Nation: Why We Are Entering the Golden Age of Indian Startups” & is a recommended read for everyone (no not *just* those in the innovation ecosystem).
In this two part post, I’ll first cover why you should read the book & then compare it with another wonderful book with a similar name ‘Startup Nation’ (about 🇮🇱).
Gist of the book: The authors argue that India is at a genuine inflection point & can reclaim a much larger share of global economic weight through its startups aiming toward the #ViksitBharat 2047 vision. It draws on 180+ interviews with founders, investors, policymakers & academics.
Core thesis:-
Indian startups reached a combined valuation of over $400 billion in roughly a decade…surpassing the market cap of the entire IT services industry (~$325 billion), which took 35 years. The authors see this as the start of a “golden age” not the peak. India once accounted for ~25% of global GDP. Startups as per them are the vehicle to move back toward that scale of global relevance.
Five converging forces they highlight:-
-Experienced/repeat founders emerging from earlier companies.
-Broad-based innovation across sectors & beyond just Tier-1 cities.
-More startups building for global markets from day one.
-Deeper capital markets & rising domestic/global investor interest.
-Government as an enabler (digital public infrastructure like UPI/Aadhaar, opening of sectors such as space & defence, regulatory easing).
Caveats and gaps the authors acknowledge:-
-Much of the venture capital boom was concentrated in 2021–22.
-India spends only ~0.65% of GDP on R&D (vs ~2.6% China, ~3.5% US). They call for a major increase (toward ~3%).
-The ecosystem must convert funding into durable, high-margin companies rather than inflated private valuations.
-They flag initiatives like the Anusandhan National Research Foundation and the ₹1 lakh crore RDI Fund as promising but note the need for far more private R&D and process capability.
Overall tone:
Optimistic and ecosystem-focused rather than purely founder-heroic. It treats startups as part of a larger system (talent + capital + regulation + public infrastructure + large companies + universities) & positions the next two decades as the window for Indian firms to build both for India & for the world. Anandan has separately projected India’s first $100 billion venture-backed company by 2030.
The title is deliberate. “Lift-off” signals that the structural groundwork is largely in place & the engines are now firing. It is an optimistic look at the future trajectory, not a claim that the hard problems of R&D intensity, conversion from prototype to durable production, or, process knowledge have already been solved. Those remain open…

Imagine a battlefield covered with sensors that detect the enemy even when drones cannot fly.
Fog, heavy rain and electronic warfare create blind spots. A “smart skin of the ground” is a distributed network of acoustic and seismic sensors, mini-radars and ground robots could help turn the terrain itself into a continuous sensor network.
In an in-depth interview with @Oboronka1, Brave1 explores how these technologies can work together to improve battlefield awareness.

Hehe!
Founders raising pre seed at unreasonably high valuations are at trouble nowadays.
Many used storytelling techniques, but they forgot to figure out the customers and the overall experience.
Pivots (small or large), adjacent markets and throwing money at problems are not working.
Neither are those founders.
A bit dark but true.

America built its industrial strength by inventing better ways to make things. Carnegie scaled steel. Ford transformed car production. Engineering made things affordable that once weren’t.
Then, in too many industries, we handed the responsibility for progress to financial managers and politicians.
That was a cop-out.
Inventing a better process is hard. Cutting investment and finding cheaper labor is easier. We rewarded the easier answer, then acted surprised when our manufacturing capabilities followed our factories overseas.
We thought we could keep the innovation while someone else did the making. But making is how you learn. We weakened that feedback loop. China kept building and kept learning.
Now we want our industrial capacity back, but our ambition too often stops at financial incentives and automation.
Automation matters. But putting a robot in front of an old process does not automatically change its economics. A stamping press still needs dedicated tooling. That investment still needs enough volume to justify it.
Treating labor automation as the answer is a failure of imagination.
We should be inventing processes that change the underlying constraints.
That is Machina’s mission. RoboCraftsman first task was to form the same sheet metal used in mass production without geometry-specific dies. Our goal is economical production at low and mid volumes, with a path to conventional stamping when demand warrants it. That last part is a key.
Drones are the perfect example. A program may start with small orders and changing designs, yet eventually need hundreds of thousands of units. The manufacturing strategy should anticipate both.
Composites have their place. But making the first aircraft successfully does not mean you have solved production at scale.
For larger airframes that are suited to sheet metal, our goal is to support early production into the tens of thousands with RoboCraftsman, depending on the part and program and if a signle design should scale. They can then move to stamping when volumes justify the tooling.
A product should not need mass-production demand before it can afford to exist.
Rebuilding American industry should mean recovering the ambition to invent better ways to manufacture. We cannot financialize our way back to that.

Happy Ayudha Pooja, Dussehra.
A day we gather to honour our tools. The machines we work with every single day, and the instruments that check their work.
Every part we make, and every micron we hold, starts with them.
Wishing everyone a happy Dussehra.
