Jagtar Singh Johal was released on bail today from an Indian prison, after almost nine years of what the UN has called an "arbitrary detention". He had to surrender his passport as part of the bail conditions and is not allowed to speak to the media about the case. The ordeal has been held up as an example of India's broken justice system and the manner in which it is used to silence political dissent from the Sikh community.
