__________
Anak Krakatau” Erupts Violently; THEOS-2 Captures Plumes from Space
.
Anak Krakatau volcano in Indonesia’s Sunda Strait has been erupting continuously since the night of September 4, 2026. The activity has included lava spewing into the sky, explosive sounds, and volcanic ash plumes rising to approximately 15,200 meters. This has caused ash to spread across parts of Java and Sumatra—including Jakarta—and disrupted air travel, leading to the temporary closure of several airports for safety reasons (Reuters).
.
On September 7, 2026, GISTDA’s THEOS-2 satellite captured images of Anak Krakatau, revealing plumes of smoke and ash still billowing from the crater. Satellite imagery serves as a vital tool for remotely monitoring volcanic activity and tracking the dispersion of smoke and ash plumes over large areas.
.
Currently, the PVMBG maintains the alert level at Level 3 (Siaga) and enforces a 3-kilometer exclusion zone around the crater. Volcanic activity is being closely monitored; while the initial phase of intense, continuous eruption has subsided, intermittent eruptions continue to occur (BNPB).
.
Located in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, Anak Krakatau is one of Indonesia’s active volcanoes. Situated along the "Ring of Fire," the country faces recurring risks from volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. This event serves as another example highlighting the importance of disaster monitoring and the use of space technology to support timely situation tracking.

(Moon Base Capabilities)
(Lunar Science and Technology Payload)
