The best brand collaborations do more than put two logos next to each other. Final Boss Sour @finalbosssour's Pac-Man partnership began with a product insight: pineapple-flavored dippers whose shape and playful energy naturally led the team to Pac-Man. 🍍 🕹️ The outcome: since launching in January 2026, Final Boss Sour x Pac-Man has generated $525K in revenue, become the brand’s #2 best-selling SKU, driven repurchases, and created meaningful engagement on TikTok. Our key takeaways: 1. Start with the product and the audience, not the size of the IP. 2. Build a shared world rather than borrowing another brand’s recognition. 3. Plan for a different operating rhythm.

The best brand collaborations do not need much explaining. @finalbosssour x PAC-MAN worked because the product, visual world, and community already fit together. Launched in January 2026, the collaboration has generated $525K to date and has become Final Boss Sour’s #2 best-selling SKU. AI infrastructure is not the end state. The hyperscalers are spending hundreds of billions to build the foundation. But the real question is: What consumer products will justify it? At GFR, we believe the answer is agents. Not chatbots. Not AI wrappers. But persistent, context-aware consumer experiences across entertainment, creativity, discovery, learning, wellness, and storytelling. The infrastructure bet only matters if it unlocks products people return to daily.

In consumer AI, horizontal is overrated. The stronger opportunities are vertical and opinionated. As models commoditize, differentiation shifts to UX, culture, and community for a specific audience.

A lot of people expected models to get smaller and cheaper. Instead, many got bigger. That matters because it changes how startups build: shorter outputs, selective model usage, and UX that hides technical limits from users.
65
One of the biggest lessons from image AI: Consumer AI monetizes best when people want to share, customize, or own the output. That is a stronger signal than model novelty alone. Shared output and identity-linked creation are where consumer behavior starts to get durable.

California’s SB-68 goes into effect July 2026, and it’s about to change how we dine out. 🍝🍔🥗 For the first time, large restaurants must disclose major allergens across every menu item. For consumers: → less guessing → more control → safer dining For restaurants: → a new layer of complexity Platforms like @getFoodini are turning this shift into an opportunity, building “dietary intelligence” that translates ingredient data into real customer trust. Is the "Labubu Hype" dead in 2026? After production ramped to meet global demand, the extreme secondary market premiums for common figures have corrected. Brian Takemasa, Associate at GFR, believes that Pop Mart is proving it is a scalable IP Factory rather than a one-hit wonder. As Labubu matures, Skullpanda has emerged as the 2026 Alpha. It's "dark-gothic" and introspective aesthetic appeals to a more fashion-forward collector, proving Pop Mart can successfully rotate "vibes" to keep the consumer loop fresh.

Founder signal: the era of "growth story" is over. Teams that raised too much, too quickly, based on reputation rather than traction, struggled in 2025. Investors now distinguish sharply between true PMF and “PMF-like” signals (e.g., revenue driven purely by paid marketing rather than retention or love for the product). Founders who didn’t adjust to this mindset shift hit the hardest walls.

"The strongest consumer founders don’t obsess over tech. They obsess over their audience," said Yasushi Komori @Yasushi_EN. Two of our top performers, Final Boss Sour @finalbosssour and Alinea @alineainvest_, constantly adapt their UX to what their communities actually want. Founders who iterate with users win. The rest struggle.

"The most compelling AI startups are not leading with 'AI' alone," said @TeppeiTsutsui. At one of our events during GDC, @ShizukuAILabs stood out not just for its technology but more for its focus on entertainment, performance, and character IP. In consumer AI, the strongest products will likely be the ones that use AI to build something people actually care about, not just something technically impressive. #consumerai #gaming #startups

Our key takeaways include: 💸 The current market is shaping not just what founders build, but also how investors want to participate. 🤖 AI was part of the experience, but not the whole story. 🌐 Gaming remains a deeply global business, not just in audience, but in how relationships and opportunities are formed.

2026 was a smaller year for GDC. There were fewer giant booths, fewer big-company spectacles, and less of the usual “show floor theater” from major players. But that also opened up room for something else. Our latest blog features insights and thoughts from Teppei Tsutsui @TeppeiTsutsui, Brian Takemasa, and Val Siau, who attended GDC this year. Many wonder why Labubu, of all toy characters, became the breakout star of 2025. At GFR, we view the "Collectible Economy" as a sophisticated global asset class. In an era where AI can generate infinite digital content, physical items that represent identity, status, and emotional connection have become the ultimate social currency. In our latest blog by Brian Takemasa, we are tracking three major pillars defining this space: Pop Mart, Pokémon, and One Piece. Learn more about how the world of collectibles is moving faster than ever: gfrfund.com/blog/collectible… #consumerinsights #consumerbehavior #popmart #pokemon #onepiece #genz

In hindsight, yakitori might be the best way to start our GDC week. 😉 🍗 Last Sunday, GFR Fund and Z Venture Capital hosted Crossplay: A GDC Sunday Social in San Francisco, bringing together founders, investors, and publishers from across the global gaming and entertainment ecosystem. Over freshly grilled yakitori, handmade onigiri, wine, sake, and beer, guests from the US and beyond connected across gaming, entertainment, and consumer AI. #GDC2026 #GameDev #GamingIndustry #ConsumerAI #VentureCapital #GlobalGaming
