One gift. Three Japanese verbs. Follow the direction, then choose the subject.
1. I give a book to a friend:
私は友達に本をあげました。
Watashi wa tomodachi ni hon o agemashita. — I gave a book to a friend.
あげる (ageru): the subject gives to someone else.
Now a friend gives a book to me. The next two sentences describe that SAME gift:
2. Start with the giver:
友達が私に本をくれました。
Tomodachi ga watashi ni hon o kuremashita. — A friend gave me a book.
くれる (kureru): someone gives to me or someone close to me.
3. Start with the receiver:
私は友達から本をもらいました。
Watashi wa tomodachi kara hon o moraimashita. — I received a book from a friend.
もらう (morau): the subject receives.
Quick check: A friend gives you a book. You start with “私は友達から…”
Which ending fits:
Answer:
Hon o moraimashita. — I received a book.
Do not reverse the gift just because you change the subject.
