Check out our new paper in Nature Reviews Psychology on studying empathy as a dyadic process. I couldn’t have asked for a better person to write this with, or a more fitting way to mark the completion of Shir’s PhD. Congratulations, @ShirGenzer !
Excited to share our new Review article published in Nature Reviews Psychology with @AnatPerry ! Traditionally, empathy research has focused primarily on the empathizer. In our paper, we conceptualize empathic interaction as a shared dyadic process shaped by both partners. 🧵 1/3

If you are interested in AI and the human experience, and are in Toronto, don't miss this event! I was thrilled to co-organize this with @minzlicht. Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend, as I will be voting in-person in Israel, in hope for a better future for my county 🤞🏼

ALT Join the Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society for The Human Variable: Psychology for the AI Age, a one-day conference convened by Michael Inzlicht that brings together leading researchers from psychology, philosophy, and computer science to examine what the human mind can tell us about AI, and what AI can tell us about the human mind.
My paper on regulating empathy on social media is now out in SM+S doi.org/10.1177/205630512614…. Working with @chrisoveis, Emily Zohar, and @minzlicht, I show that training individuals to 'share not compare' for + emotions and 'care not share' for - emotions improves their well-being.

How should you respond when friends share good news?
My article with @chrisoveis, Dr. Gu, and Dr. Gordon (doi.org/10.1037/emo0001707) suggests feeling positive emotions with your friend when they 'capitalize' (share good news) correlates with better responses.

This suggests that, if we wish to respond effectively when people share good news, we should try to use our empathy to feel what the other person is feeling, co-experiencing positive emotions with them. As a bonus, this seems to help empathizers too: psycnet.apa.org/doi/10.1037/…
Check out the paper and let me know what you think!

Why is lower wealth often associated with greater empathy? New work at SPPS w @JessicaDAyers @jungyulkwon Peter Todd @AthenaAktipis shows that lower wealth can cultivate empathic concern through challenges and more helping- but only among moderate helpers🧵doi.org/10.1177/194855062614…

I recently spoke at The Love Consortium's Virtual Symposium: Empathy as an Interpersonal Process youtu.be/tyRA8yLG3jI?si=Xf-w…. I presented some work on how receiving different dimensions empathy predicts perceived partner responsiveness in positive and negative interactions. #Empathy

We are deeply saddened to share that Dr. Paul Ekman has passed away. His groundbreaking research transformed our understanding of emotion, facial expression, deception and compassion. We are creating a memorial page if you would like to share a reflection: ow.ly/vvX650XtSyi

📢 New Paper Alert‼️
Now published in JPSP, we sought to address a seemingly simple question: When people reason about conflicts between the "heart" and the "head", which do people think is more reflective of one's authentic preference?

Is the idea that getting into a romantic relationship increases well-being a myth? A new MacLab paper says no. And I had so much to say about this work, I started a Substack: The Unromantic. Links for the paper and the Substack in replies.

Excited to see this paper out! We observe distinct influence of education and income on health and happiness. Higher education was more consistency associated with better health; higher income with greater wellbeing and happiness.
Drawing on daily emotion and health reports from over 71K adults, Newman et al. find that education is consistently linked to better health, while income is associated with greater well-being. @wendybmendes #health #wellbeing

Took a workshop recently (smart-workshops.com) on Interpersonal Synchrony and it was super cool! Here, I calculate affective synchrony from continuous ratings of a naturalistic convo. This is how sharers and listeners felt at low, medium, and high levels of synchrony📈📉
