Today we celebrate the birthday of Admiral Arleigh Burke, a naval leader whose legacy continues to shape the U.S. Navy and Bath Iron Works. A WWII Navy Cross recipient and the only person to serve three terms as Chief of Naval Operations, he is the namesake of the Navy’s longest-running shipbuilding program – the DDG 51‑class destroyers. At BIW, we’re honored to build these ships and carry forward his legacy.

Statement of BIW President Charles F. Krugh in response to the announcement today by Sen. Susan Collins and the Department of War assessing that BIW is ready to build an additional destroyer for the U.S. Navy: “This announcement recognizes BIW’s unprecedented improvements in our build process, our production schedule and the stability and skill of our shipbuilders,” said BIW President Charles F. Krugh. “Together these improvements are accelerating delivery of ships to the U.S. Navy, where they perform their critical role protecting our country and our families. We appreciate this clear and consistent demand signal, which will help propel our accelerated performance.” “At a time when our nation urgently needs more surface combatants and is even looking to shipyards overseas, this American shipyard is answering that call, delivering each destroyer to the Navy faster than the last. The announcement makes it clear that we are succeeding in our efforts to improve shipbuilding and that is leading to more work – which is good for the business and good for each and every one of us who works here,” Krugh said. “I’d like to specifically thank Sen. Susan Collins for her advocacy in her role as chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee for working to show that BIW and each of you who work here have earned the privilege of building this ship for the U.S. Navy. We are fortunate to have a Congressional Delegation that actively supports our shipyard.”
Today’s decision by the Department validates the capacity of Bath Iron Works and the hard work of its highly skilled 6,800 employees who build the best ships in the world. I have advocated for a second destroyer to be included in this year’s budget, and I worked with the Administration during its careful review and repeated visits to BIW to verify the ability of the shipyard to construct another ship while continuing to complete its current workload. This certification will help keep our Navy strong and support BIW as a steady source of good-paying Maine jobs. I will continue to work to ensure our shipbuilders have the resources to meet the Navy’s needs at a time when China is relentlessly expanding its fleet. collins.senate.gov/newsroom/…

The hot dogs and hamburgers were sizzling at Tech Center last month as the team enjoyed a BBQ and a jam session. So much of our engineering and design magic happens here, and it’s inspiring to see that work come to life in our ships. Thank you for all you do!

Two Bath-built Ticonderoga-class cruisers, USS Shiloh (CG 67) and USS Lake Erie (CG 70), were decommissioned last week after more than three decades of service. USS Shiloh leaves a legacy that spans combat operations, including Operation Desert Strike and Operation Iraqi Freedom, along with humanitarian missions and 17 years forward deployed in Japan. USS Lake Erie helped pioneer the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense system and played key roles in Operation Southern Watch and the 2008 satellite intercept in Operation Burnt Frost. On September 25, USS Lake Erie was decommissioned at Naval Base San Diego, and on September 30, USS Shiloh marked its final day in the fleet at Joint Base Pearl Harbor–Hickam. One of our employees had the honor of photographing Shiloh during an open house before its final ceremony. Fair winds and following seas to all who served aboard these Bath-built ships!
