New #BigOilRealityCheck report by @OilChangeUS shows how oil & gas companies cannot be trusted to put out the fire. 8 companies alone are on track to use 30% of our remaining 1.5°C carbon budget oilchange.org/borc

good trouble...
TONIGHT we shut down Vivek's town hall and called him out for what he is: a Climate Criminal who has invested $50 million in fossil fuels.
He told us he's proud to be making money off the fossil fuel companies that are burning our planet.

While the decision on the global stocktake took most of the limelight especially in relation to mitigation, less attention was paid to the decision on the global goal on adaptation (GGA) where Parties struggled to find consensus on the GGA framework.

My letter in the Financial Times.
"Carbon markets are not the solution to a very real finance problem. Developed countries need to stop looking for ways to dodge their responsibilities and instead actually deliver on their financing promises."

Civil society is such a crucial part of the @UNFCCC climate negotiations. We were lucky to have Marine Biology PhD Eesha Ragnani attend #COP28 to document these important voices as they followed the talks on the ground.

The loudest statement at this #COP28 plenary is the absence of small island states when the gavel went down.
Source described the stark contrast from the overflow room: while the plenary applauded, "here there is only anger or stunned silence."
Here's the statement from AOSIS:
Replying to @CANIntl
Samoa on behalf of @AOSISChair says that the GST decision gavelled through when they were not in the room.
And that's just clause #27, more to dig into here, but this not the "north star" we've been promised all year.
➡️ support for nuclear, removal technologies and carbon capture and storage and "low carbon hydrogen"
➡️focus on "inefficient fossil fuel subsidies" with not definition of what makes a fossil fuel subsidy efficient or inefficient
And then it gets real disappointing...
➡️no phase out of fossil fuels, just phase down of unabated coal (aka emissions magicked away by CCS are ok) and "transitioning away from fossil fuels"
➡️ mitigation reductions now should be "in line with 1.5C pathways"
➡️no more "to take action" though and instead parties "to contribute...in nationally determined manner"
➡️gone from a "could" to a "should" before the list of mitigation options
📢 New #globalstocktake #COP28 draft text! Still digging into changes but at first glance:
An analysis 🧵:
➡️ we do see some strengthening of verbs through out - from "resolves, welcomes, notes" to "commits, underscores, underlines"

BREAKING #COP28: Small Island Developing States @AOSISChair very concerned by the current draft text: “weak langage on fossil fuels”, “completely insufficient”. “It doesn’t refer to a phase out at all.” “Any text that compromises 1.5°C will be rejected.” Minister Cedric Schuster
Very important analysis here! Verb strength is crucial in international treaties / decisions, lest we forget the "should / shall" debacle that nearly toppled the Paris Agreement in 2015. #COP28 #climatejustice #ClimateActionNow #COP28UAE
Hardly any of the verbs in the latest draft global stocktake text at #COP28 actually *ask for action*
It's all "notes", "recognises" etc etc, with a few weak "invites"and only a very few slightly stronger "calls on"
(most "requests" go to the secretariat or similar)
