Measuring the Subnational Variance in State Presence This article by @Gagneman @CappelenChris @KasperBrandt2 and @davsjob makes an interesting proposal to measure the uneven reach of the state, a key matter in the study of the state. Open Access: sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

Can the police be trusted to punish criminals? Is it easy to get identity documents, and a primary school place? Agneman et al aggregate @afrobarometer responses, then create a continent-wide model to predict state capacity. This predicts services, eg vaccinations sciencedirect.com/science/ar…

How do civilians respond to violence? Using an experimental measure of rule compliance, I show that victimization triggers everyday resistance; victims are less likely to comply with armed groups' rules. Full paper 👉 doi.org/10.1016/j.euroecorev…

📡 "We can't improve what we can't measure." @bethnoveck writes on how @GAgneman and @NTNU_Economics researchers are using AI to map local governance effectiveness. Could this help democracy builders target interventions where they're most needed? rebootdemocracy.ai/blog/rese…

Which we link to a range of spatially granular predictors of state presence, such as road network and travel time to the capital.

And finally, we predict the survey-based index of state presence with the input variables using TensorFlow and extrapolate the predictions to inform on state presence at a granular spatial level.
