The final paper from my PhD is out. 🍾 The end of an era!
It's about the impact of genetic background on cardiac disease caused by sodium channel dysfunction. Check it out here: academic.oup.com/europace/ar…
Thanks to all co-authors, and especially my PhD supervisor @CarolRemme

From render to reality🫀
We're making great progress with our optical platform and are currently optimising before the main experiments.
This is a little sneak peek at our poster at the EWGCCE in Graz on 1-3 July, see you there!
Happy to share our latest publication! We provide a short review on the current state of cardiac optogenetics and introduce a new strategy for dual optical mapping, while also implementing optogenetics 👇
In addition, we introduced a novel strategy to simultaneously monitor cardiac voltage and calcium dynamics, while still being able to implement optogenetic manipulation:

Since the start of this project, we have been exploring the use of optogenetics to modify cardiac electrical dynamics. Recently, we demonstrated the possibility to locally manipulate conduction and repolarisation using patterned sub-threshold illumination: doi.org/10.3389/fphys.2023.1…

Our next steps will be to develop a panoramic optical manipulation-and-detection platform and explore pharmacological strategies to further enhance gradients in repolarisation. Future updates will be shared here!

Finally! Our review which is now out in Cardiovascular Research! It’s about the regulation of the Cardiac Sodium Channel Nav1.5 by Microtubule Plus-End Tracking Proteins. It’s one of the products from my PhD I’m most proud of, so let me give you a short summary: 🧵(1/8)
From this, we propose that +TIPs and NaV1.5 interacting proteins collaborate to achieve specific localisation of NaV1.5. This gives new possibilities for the development of drugs to prevent cardiac arrhythmias and is important for identifying mutations leading to arrhythmia (7/8)

And of course, a shout out to the co-authors Niels Galjart, @VincentPortero and @CarolRemme
And don’t hesitate to shoot me a message in case you have any questions! (end/🧵)
Happy to share that our latest study is published in Frontiers in Physiology!
We show that gradients in ventricular conduction and repolarisation can be manipulated by sub-threshold optogenetic stimulation.
