"Playing football was like being somewhere, it was like your own world inside a world, with it’s own rules, where I was happy. Yes, for Christ’s sake, that was what it was all about: happiness. Being somewhere else apart from inside yourself." - Karl Ove Knausgaard

Happy to announce the launch of the new 100 Year website we built for the person who coined the term "personal computer' and co-created the first online community: @stewartbrand. It includes his entire ~50,000 photo archive that is now in the Public Domain stewartbrand.org/

Japanese menswear publications are so good, it's ridiculous. If you're in the US, you can find Popeye (and other Japanese menswear magazines) at Kinokuniya. Note that most of them are in Japanese text.
#popeyemagazine #ALWAYSPOLO

I am so moved that people are still reaching out to me about this essay I wrote in July - I was in LA then too, thinking through some stuff. An end of an era which - despite anything I tried, despite however much I cried - never began. I'm glad it didn't. american-innocence.com/p/thi…

People I admire: Mack Tilling. Mack’s Finest Gelato in Park City is getting a reputation as the nation’s best gelato. Mack spent nearly two decades learning how to make it before opening his shop. It began with a cooking class in Italy. He kept going back, studying with Italian gelato makers and working through the chemistry of recipes. At home, friends became his tasters. He brought batches to gatherings at the Park City dog park, where people kept telling him he should open a place. Around his 60th birthday, he decided to do it. If you’re in Park City, stop by Mack’s Finest on Bonanza Drive. One spoonful and you’ll understand what all the fuss is about.

UPDATE: I’m launching a podcast called Tacit Knowledge. My goal is to tackle something I think will remain scarce in the age of AI: working on hard problems where the next step is unclear. Goal is to chat with my favorite doers. Feedback welcome. renaissancephilanthropy.subs…

Big fan of the Amtrak train I'm on. Much bigger and more comfortable seats than British trains have – Amtrak coach is as good as British first class. The carriages have a cool brushed steel exterior. The conductor wears a fun peaked cap. Americans: surprisingly good at trains!

The Tower Broker.
Stripe Press’s newest author is in the tiny handful of people with the strongest claim to being New York’s modern power broker: Mary Ann Tighe, CEO of CBRE’s New York Tri-State region. Mary Ann’s fingerprints are all over Manhattan. Since becoming CEO in 2002 she’s brokered more than 133 million square feet of commercial real estate transactions. A (very small) selection of her deals: She brought Condé Nast to 4 Times Square, and at the time it was the first new office building constructed in New York in a decade(!). She represented the NYT in the development of its new headquarters on Eighth Ave. She brought Coach in as the first Hudson Yards tenant. For 1199SEIU, one of the country’s largest healthcare workers’ unions, she helped engineer a 580,000-square-foot headquarters deal projected to save the union and its benefit funds roughly $400 million over 30 years. And perhaps most meaningfully, Mary Ann was instrumental in rebuilding the World Trade Center, including bringing Condé Nast to One World Trade, and, more than two decades later, securing American Express for roughly 2 million square feet at 2 World Trade Center (broke ground ~ two months ago!). Mary Ann’s book (tentatively titled BUILDING NEW YORK) traces the stories of the deals themselves, but also the personalities who’ve made modern New York, from mayors, to CEOs, to the Vatican—whose approval she needed to broker the air rights for St. Patrick’s Cathedral! It’s rare to get such a candid view into how the real estate sausage gets made, especially at Mary Ann’s level. We can’t wait to bring you her book.

Participated earlier today in a group reading of the Divinity School Address in the very same room where Emerson delivered it in 1838. Touching, thrilling, and a reminder of what a rhetorical ambush RWE sprang on those poor students--all seven of them.
