As a public leader, at what point does power change you?
Maybe it starts small: a favour you should not return. An exception you make “just this once.” A decision to stay quiet because speaking up could complicate things.

What happens when those choices add up?
Just a few days to go until East Africa Public Leadership Programme Seminar 4, where our fellows will explore these tensions through real experiences and perspectives from public life.

Entering public life comes with opportunities to influence decisions, shape policy and serve communities. But it also comes with demands: your time, privacy, relationships, and sometimes your principles. #PublicLeadership
The difficult part is that these trade-offs do not always announce themselves. They can come through pressure, expectations or the desire to hold on to the position you worked hard to reach. #Futurelect #PublicLeadership
We are counting down to East Africa Public Leadership Programme Seminar 4, where our fellows will reflect on what public service may ask of them and what they are prepared to stand for.

Public leadership doesn’t come with a handbook. It takes time to learn, question, listen, make mistakes, hear different perspectives and understand what it really means to serve others.

I was honoured to speak to the current cohort of the @futurelectorg East Africa Public Leadership Programme at the KCB Leadership Centre in Nairobi.
As AI begins to shape how public resources are allocated, technical literacy for public leaders becomes a matter of accountability. Bridging the gap between technological pace and leadership frameworks is essential for public trust.
We just wrapped the East Africa Public Leadership Programme Seminar 2: The State of the Region. Our Fellows moved from the "Inner Work" of personal trauma and resilience to the "Systems Knowledge" of regional history, AI, and sustainable development.
Today, at the East Africa Public Leadership Programme Seminar 2: The State of the Region, we look to the horizon.

We have spent the week on history and internal resilience, but today is about the "Outer Work", the technical and global shifts that are currently rewriting the rules of governance.

Led by our pastoral lead, East Africa Public Leadership Programme Fellows are exploring the triggers and personal drivers that shape their leadership. In high-pressure public service, resilience is a technical requirement for the challenges of tomorrow.
The first 48 hours of Seminar 2 involve zero PowerPoints. Instead, our Fellows start in self-organised small groups. The "Why" is simple: If you want to lead in a democracy, you start by building trust with your peers. This is where real leadership muscle is built.
