Villagers cut its nesting trees. Children were told it was a bad omen. By the 1990s, Assam had barely 115 Greater Adjutant storks left.
Then one scientist, a new mother of twins picked up a fallen chick and refused to let the species die.
Purnima Devi Barman. The bird is called Hargila. This is how she brought it back.

Kamrup nests: 28 in 2007 → 200 - 250+ now. World’s largest Greater Adjutant colony.
Assam birds: ~115 in the 1990s → 1,800+ today.
Global estimate: 3,180+. IUCN: Endangered → Near Threatened (2023).
Target: 5,000 birds, expanding to Bihar and Cambodia.
Purnima: first girl in her family to pursue higher education. PhD on the bird people hated. Grandmother on the Brahmaputra taught her bird songs.
Awards followed the work , Nari Shakti Puraskar, UN Champions of the Earth, Whitley Gold (“Green Oscar”), TIME Women of the Year 2025.

The lesson India keeps missing.
We fund tigers. We ignore the cleanup crew. These storks eat what cities throw away. Lose them and the dump stays.
Top-down protection failed this bird for decades. A sisterhood + baby showers + cloth motifs worked.
If one Assamese biologist and 20,000 women can pull a bone-swallowing stork off the extinction list , what else have we written off too early?
Name an Indian species, or conservationist, more people should know.

A 40-year-old mint-green house stood in a Himalayan debris flow that erased the street around it.
Six people were on the balcony.
The river was carrying mud, ice, and car-sized boulders.
The house did not fall.
This is not a miracle story. It is a construction and geography lesson the Himalayas cannot afford to ignore.

Keep the scale honest.
This was not the only structure left standing in the wider basin. Claims that it was a pastor’s house and a unique divine exception were checked and do not hold.
What does hold:
The same house had already lived through the 2015 earthquake when nearby homes collapsed.
Himalayan towns will see more glacial-collapse floods as ice fields destabilise. Unreinforced masonry on a debris-flow path is a bet against physics.
Paint colour did not save this family. The skeleton, the footing, and the exact piece of ground did.
