In my second year of BTech, a guy from college asked me out for coffee. I had never been on a proper date before, so I said yes. Honestly, I was more curious about the experience than anything else. We decided to meet after college. I remember thinking about what to wear, what to talk about, and how awkward it might get if we ran out of things to say. We met at a small café and ordered coffee. At first, we talked about college, exams, friends and all the usual things. It was actually nice. We laughed a lot, and for a while, I thought maybe this was how these things started. After our second coffee, he suddenly became serious. He looked at me and said he had liked me for a long time. Then he told me he wanted to be in a relationship with me. I was completely unprepared for that conversation. In my head, I had only agreed to have coffee. I wasn't expecting a proposal after two cups. I didn't know what to say, so I told him I needed some time to think. He agreed, and we left. For the next two days, I kept thinking about it. I spoke to my friends, replayed the conversation in my head, and tried to understand whether I actually liked him. Then I realised something. I liked talking to him, I enjoyed the coffee, and I liked the feeling of someone being interested in me. But I didn't have romantic feelings for him. So I told him honestly that I couldn't say yes just because he liked me. I didn't want to start a relationship when I wasn't sure about my own feelings. He was disappointed, of course, but he accepted my answer. Looking back, it was a small and slightly childish experience, but I learned something important from it. Just because someone likes you doesn't mean you have to like them back.
