Winner-take-all voting isn’t the only type of electoral system out there. Let’s talk about fusion voting. @Promote_VoteMI
Today, at least one-third of Wisconsin voters don’t identify with either major party. This case asks a fundamental question: Does the Constitution protect the right of minor parties to organize, build coalitions, and participate meaningfully in our democracy—or can laws designed to entrench a two-party duopoly remain in place forever? #FusionVoting

At a time when many Americans are frustrated by polarization, gridlock, and a lack of political choice, fusion voting offers a practical, time-tested alternative. It allows voters to support the candidates they prefer without being confined to a strict two-party framework. #FusionVoting @LeaderEthics_us
A noted civil rights lawyer and law professor makes the constitutional case for reviving fusion voting (and fusion parties) — and explains why he thinks the timing is right. @sbagen @Mlsif Read more: substack.com/home/post/p-206…
The claim that fusion voting confuses voters doesn’t hold up. Wisconsin successfully used fusion voting for decades, voters in states where it remains legal navigate it just fine, and research shows voters readily understand cross-nominated candidates. Protecting a two-party monopoly is not the same as protecting voters. #FusionVoting @LawForward
Something is missing from American politics — and it’s not a policy position or a charismatic leader. It’s a structural connection between the people who hold office and the communities they claim to represent. Read more: substack.com/home/post/p-202…
We shouldn’t have to choose between being independent and having a real voice @McConaughey. Nearly 6 in 10 voters dislike each party, and a quarter dislike both. Most Americans want another option, but only 15% would actually risk a third-party vote because they don’t want to hand the election to the side they fear most.
Fusion voting offers a path forward: let multiple parties support the same candidate while keeping their own ballot lines, so voters can back an independent-minded coalition without wasting their vote.
Fusion isn’t a new-fangled idea, by the way, back in the 1800s third parties used it all the time to force their issues onto the agenda. In Texas, the People’s Party (also called the Populist Party) was founded in 1891 and it spread widely, challenging the dominant Democrats for several years. But they outlawed it because they didn’t want the competition.
With fusion, you can "protest" by voting for the candidate who can win, on the line of a party that represents what you actually believe. Your vote counts fully, and the party you’re frustrated with sees exactly how many people are sending them a message.

“A permanent check to keep them both honest.”
That line from @McConaughey’s video captures why we’re building @UnitedKansas . Voters deserve meaningful choices and leaders who have to earn their support.
The September 22–30 New York Times/Siena Kansas poll shows the opening:
➡️ 50% of independents said the Democratic Party is too far left.
➡️ 61% said the Republican Party is too far right.
Nationally, Pew’s 2025 survey found just 17% of Americans trusted Washington to do what is right always or most of the time. That’s Federal Government and we are focused on State Government but it provides context to our story.
That frustration deserves a constructive response: more choice, stronger accountability, and government that earns public trust.
United Kansas is building a political home for practical, independent-minded Kansans. Principled moderation means having convictions, listening, and judging ideas on their merits.
That’s also why @ScottMorganKS is running for Kansas Secretary of State. The person overseeing our elections should be a trusted #referee who puts voters ahead of partisan advantage. Scott offers experienced leadership focused on fair, secure, accessible elections.
And it’s why we’re fighting to restore @FusionVoting in Kansas.
Fusion would allow more than one party to nominate the same candidate. You could vote for a shared candidate on the United Kansas line, and your vote would count toward that candidate’s total while showing support for United Kansas’s principles.
A candidate could then see exactly how much support our coalition delivered and have a reason to keep earning it.
We can build an organization that lasts beyond one election, support capable candidates, and give the political center a stronger voice.
Watch the video. Meet Scott. Help us build United Kansas.

Wisconsin’s fusion voting ban wasn’t enacted as a good-government reform. It was passed in 1897 after decades of successful cross-party coalitions, when those in power sought to limit competition from emerging parties and fusion movements. The result? Minor parties were pushed toward irrelevance and voters were left with fewer meaningful choices. @UnitedWisc
In the conversation with Micah Sifry, Heather McGhee connects the dots between the racial politics she chronicled in The Sum of Us and the authoritarian moment we’re living through right now — and she doesn’t let the two-party system off the hook. Read more: substack.com/home/post/p-198…
"Fusion voting is the ability of political parties to cross endorse candidates in elections and voters to vote for the same candidate on the party line of their choosing. Once a commonplace part of the democratic process across the nation, it has a long history in New York, one of the few remaining states that still permits it."

Fusion voting is a promising reform in its own right—and a step toward a more representative democracy. By giving voters more choices and parties more room to grow, it can help lay the groundwork for proportional representation. @SpencerOverton
The conversation ranges from the history of multiracial democracy, the weakening of the Voting Rights Act, money in politics, technology companies, party decline and the challenge of governing in an age of deep distrust.

No one knows exactly when such a window will open. If and when one does, reformers on Team Democracy should not squander it by then spending precious time debating among themselves. @SpencerOverton @Mlsif
If the goal is a less polarized politics, primary reform may not be enough. More voices, more parties, and more pathways to representation matter too. That's why reforms like fusion voting deserve a place in the conversation about strengthening democracy. washingtonpost.com/ripple/20…
His current work has focused heavily on civil-rights groups and communities of color, in part because any large change to the electoral system has to be understood in terms of who gains power, who loses it and whether historically excluded communities have real agency in the process.
Fusion voting gives voters more choice without spoilers. Pair it with proportional representation, and you have a powerful formula for reducing polarization, weakening gerrymandering, and creating a more representative democracy. nymag.com/intelligencer/arti…
In a very real sense, fusion voting and proportional representation are two sides of the same coin. They each inject proportionality into the election results. And in doing so, they each incentivize inter-party bargaining and compromise. @SpencerOverton @Mlsif
On this #IndigenousPeoplesDay, let’s remember: democracy is stronger when every voice matters. ✊ #FusionVoting—used by movements throughout history—empowers communities to be heard without being silenced by the two-party system. 🌎
