Inertia Enterprises has dramatically sped up production of fusion fuel pellets. The company cut the time needed to make the specialized fuel targets used in inertial confinement fusion (using lasers to compress the fuel) from several days down to roughly 2–3 hours. The pellets consist of a diamond shell containing frozen and gaseous deuterium-tritium fuel, which is then placed inside a gold hohlraum for laser driven compression. Working with expertise from the National Ignition Facility, the team optimized the crystal growth and manufacturing process so that what once required painstaking laboratory methods can now move toward industrial scale. Faster production reduces costs, shrinks the required facility size, and lessens the amount of expensive tritium that must be handled at any one time.
