The importance of youth workers in schools has today been highlighted by @jonpayates CEO, @YouthEndowFund (YEF) on @BBCBreakfast in light of the tragic death of Holly Newton at the hands of her ex-boyfriend. YEF’s research which reveals that 49% of teenagers in a relationship in the last year have experienced violent or controlling behaviour from their partner.

The NYA is deeply concerned about the rise in youth violence and risk of safeguarding to young people and through our Better together: Youth work with schools research report (nya.org.uk/youth-work-with-s…), we know that where youth work is taking place it is having a transformational impact on young people’s confidence and wellbeing and helping to keep them safe.

ALT "We know that if we get properly trained youth workers going into schools and teaching children to spot the signs of abuse, then violence falls by 20%. That’s a big shift and yet the government at the moment at least hasn’t been funding that activity... ...It’s an absolute no brainer if this government is serious about reducing violence against women and children.” - Jon Yates, CEO, Youth Endowment Fund
