I know first-hand how important Infectious Disease (ID) physicians are in a public health crisis. Yet, 80% of U.S. counties do not have an ID physician. To protect our nation’s public health, we must break down the barriers that stop medical students from becoming ID physicians.

Our latest is out in @J_Immunol! This was a fun little project where we explored how dysfunctional monocytes contribute to NK cell activation in severe COVID-19. We used a combination of computational exploration and in vitro validation experiments! journals.aai.org/jimmunol/ar…

The prayers for #DamarHamlin are beautiful, but @NFL, please also consider spending 2 minutes before tomorrow’s games showing a demo of hands-only #CPR & encouraging viewers to learn. With your audience, this could save lives ❤️🙏🏽 Read on to learn how to do hands-only CPR ⬇️

“We, [ID] doctors, are becoming a finite resource because people can’t financially make it work. They’re burnt out and their reward is, ‘Here, we’re going to pay you less,’ says IDSA Past President Daniel McQuillen, MD, FIDSA (@McQHoya81) about potential #Medicare payment cuts.

Which bacteria represent the most urgent threat to health? And how does this vary by region? Our estimates in @TheLancet try to address these questions @IHME_UW
NEW—Common #bacterial infections were the 2nd leading cause of death in 2019 and linked to 1 in 8 deaths globally, according to an analysis by @IHME_UW: hubs.li/Q01sTzjY0 #WAAW2022

Collectively, our data showed that gut microbiome changes do not occur in early HIV but may suggest a role for the gut #microbiome and #inflammation in #HIV susceptibility – an exciting area for more research! 7/n

Important to note that due to sample availability our study included only men who have sex with men, had limited sample size, and only followed up to 1 year after #HIV acquisition. 6/n

Prior to HIV we also observed increased inflammatory cytokines and bioactive lipids in those who acquired HIV compared to those who did not. 5/n

Where we did see the greatest #microbiome difference was *before* HIV. Using a risk-matched control cohort we observed decreased Bacteroides spp and increased Megasphaera elsdenii in those who acquired HIV compared to those who did not. 4/n

Using plasma #metabolomics we did observe changes in #bile acids following acute HIV which may interact with gut bacteria in early HIV. 3/n

Chronic #HIV has been associated with dysbiosis leading to ongoing inflammation but it is not known when this begins. Using #longitudinal samples we followed the #microbiome before and after acute HIV. Early after HIV we found limited change in the #microbiome. 2/n

👉💊 Take note, HAART is an antiquated and redundant term, and no longer has clinical relevance. All antiretroviral therapy used nowadays is "highly active", so the term ART is preferred instead. #IDTwitter #MedTwitter #FOAMed
