Home games - 6
Regulation wins - 0
Total games - 9
Regulation wins - 1 (Sept 29 vs Leafs)
I'm going to go out on the limb here, 21 days without a regulation win is recipe for no playoffs

Tonight is the 3rd time this season a rested Canadiens team faces an opponent on the 2nd night of a back-to-back. The Sharks lost 3-1 in Toronto last night.
The first two: 1-0 SO vs. Detroit (Oct. 10) and 4-3 SO vs. Buffalo (Oct. 13).

Mr. Saturday Night:
Cole Caufield, career to date:
• 174 goals in 376 games
• 0.62 goals/game on Saturdays vs 0.40 other nights
• 14 OT goals, 10 of them at the Bell Centre
Saturdays are 28% of his games but 38% of his goals.
So the salient question remains, what the happens the game nights ?
#Caufield #GoHabsGo
The Sharks own the Bell Centre.
Last 10 seasons in Montreal:
9 games. 8-0-1.
Goals: 34 for, 14 against.
Montreal's only win was in OT.
Tuesday night, the Habs get another shot at breaking the curse. #GoHabsGo

Should you read anything into the standings after 7-8 games? Last season says no.
On Oct 23, 2025, the Atlantic looked like this: MTL 1st (12 pts), DET 2nd, TOR 3rd... TBL dead last with 4 pts.
How it actually finished:
BUF: 6th to 1st (109 pts)
TBL: last to 2nd (106)
MTL: 1st to 3rd (106)
TOR: 3rd to last (78)
Across all 32 teams, early points % predicted the rest of the season at r = 0.01. Essentially zero.
Only 8 of the 16 early leaders made the playoffs. That's coin-flip odds.
Why? After 8 games, the gap between teams is no bigger than luck alone would produce. Standings don't start to mean much until 20-25 games.
Today: BOS and OTT lead at 12, MTL sits 7th with 7 pts in 7 GP. Last October that would have looked like a crisis for Tampa. They finished 2nd.

One of my favourite lines--
" Se vogliamo che tutto rimanga com'è, bisogna che tutto cambi."
("If we want everything to stay as it is, everything will have to change.")
— Lampedusa, Il Gattopardo
Good teams don't stay good by standing still. To keep winning, teams need to change.

What would a trade to Montreal cost Dylan Larkin after tax? About US$300K a year. The tax cost is not of a insignificant order of magnitude to warrant an in-depth analysis for illustrative purposes.
Assumptions:
• $8.7M salary
• Keeps his home and family in Michigan, so he remains a US resident
• Canada taxes only the share of his pay earned here, based on games played and time spent in Canada (practices, camp, travel)
In Detroit, ~10% of his pay is earned in Canada. In Montreal, ~64%.
That share is taxed at ~53% instead of ~41%. The US and Michigan credit the Canadian tax, so it isn't double-taxed.
Total tax: $3.94M (45%) vs $4.24M (49%)
Net pay: $4.76M vs $4.46M, annual cost of $300K approximately.

The Hab's hot start last season did fade: they were 9-3 in their first 12 before a slump. They still finished 48–24–10, so 7 games tells you little about where a season ends. That said, I would not dismiss the weak start this season.

One regulation win for the Montreal Canadiens. That was in the first game of the season vs. Toronto, 2 weeks ago. High time the apologists stop making excuses for this team

Nick Suzuki needs to step up a little more, he has half his points in one game this season.

Habs discipline check, 6 GP in:
30 minors taken
20 power plays drawn (bottom half)
PP 2-for-20, 10% (30th) PK 80.8% (15th)
Shorthanded 26 times, up a man just 20.
Tonight in Washington, the beat goes on..

No regulation wins in the four-game homestand for Montreal to start the year. Fortunately it's still the preseason. Perhaps they will squeak out an OT or SO win?

I was in Vermont for hiking and to take in the foliage this weekend. I can tell you that the owner of this dog is certainly not from Vermont. Groomed and dyed poodle to look like a zebra?

Tomorrow marks the second time the Canadiens will be facing a team on the second game of a back-to-back.
The Habs have the best schedule when it comes to facing opponents that are playing the second game of a back-to-back.
All to say is, that they need to take advantage of these situations.

A tetrad on four wheels: built in Japan for the Japanese market, grey-imported to the UK, plated in Alberta, parked at a Vermont hiking trail. One right-hand-drive Toyota Soarer, four countries of paperwork. 🍁🇯🇵🇬🇧🇨🇦🇺🇸

The Habs are 1-3 after losses to Pittsburgh, Carolina and Nashville. Lose to Detroit (who will be on a back to back) on Saturday and it's four straight, something they did only once in the entire 2025-26 regular season (a five-game skid last November). Not panic time, but this one matters.

2026-27 Opening-Day Roster Size Comparison
Montreal Canadiens
Forwards: 6'1.1" | 203 lbs
Defensemen: 6'1.1" | 196 lbs
Carolina Hurricanes
Forwards: 6'1.2" | 201 lbs
Defensemen: 6'1.9" | 202 lbs
Habs are balanced in height but lighter on the blue line.
Canes get a clear size boost from their D corps.
The NHL's presser "By the Numbers" doesn't have a category called "compete level" and in this regard, the Canes are at head of the NHL class.

Among my files from 50 years ago.
In the fall of '75, I started writing to Mr. Jean Béliveau. A year later, having turned 16 and having my driver's licence, I wrote again requesting to buy tickets and mailed the Canadiens a postal money order. If memory serves, they were $15 each.
On October 22, 1976, Le Gros Bill wrote back by registered mail, confirming my payment and enclosing four tickets. He even wished me "a pleasant evening at the Forum." He was one of kind, inimitable.
We drove up from Hamilton for a Saturday game. With no money for a motel, we slept off the 401 on the way home.
