This is the kind of horror that has become ordinary in eastern Congo. For years, civilians have been slaughtered, raped, abducted and buried while armed groups — FDLR, Wazalendo, M23 and others — operate with near-total impunity. Millions have been driven from their homes. The killings continue. The world issues statements and moves on.
When videos like this surface, people argue about whether it is real or staged. What is not in dispute is that Congolese civilians keep dying while those with power look the other way. That is the real scandal.
