Mint spoke to 5 people who FIREd. One common theme - they wanted better control over their time. They all continue to work but without the pressure to maximise income and career.

For M. Pattabiraman, retirement planning was never about chasing a magic corpus number or beating the market. Instead, it’s been about staying consistent, keeping things simple, and sticking to what works.
A professor at IIT Madras and the founder of personal finance platform Freefincal, Pattabiraman—affectionately known as “Pattu Sir” in India’s investing circles—achieved financial independence and early retirement (FIRE) at the age of 45.
In this podcast, he tells us the story of how he did it - watch!

My vanity and my miserliness prevent me from doing this, even though it is an excellent way to route.
Professor Pattu of @FreeFinCal has 60% of his mutual fund exposure in one single fund : the @PPFAS flexicap fund.
I asked him the reason for this and does it worry him that the fund has high cash levels and high exposure to IT stocks.
His answer was both candid and endearing 😊
He likes the fact that there is low churn and there is downside protection. Also as a long term investor, he prefers to never do back seat driving.
Thank you for the great feedback on this episode. ✨

Why do we keep talking about building a retirement corpus ? Because people underestimate how much inflation can eat into one’s savings over the years.
On this week’s episode we spoke to personal finance educator, Dr Pattabiraman , professor at IIT Madras and founder of FreeFincal, also fondly known as professor pattu. @pattufreefincal
Professor pattu talks about how to plan for your retirement by keeping return expectations and living expenses low.
If you spend ₹1 lakh every month, how much money do you actually need to retire? He breaks down the math
We discuss all this and more.

One big addition that I have noticed in case of my in laws is that expense on manual assistance goes up dramatically after 80. You don't drive your car around, you need maids for everything and in our case a 24 hour caregiver which costs as much as monthly household expenses

I discovered the mid-cappiness of Nifty Next 50 through @FreeFinCal and have been adding money through SIP since then... Pattu had warned about the volatility, but the returns have been very good...
The single most under-rated category in India is the mid-cap. I remember talking with @deepakshenoy on how the Nifty Next 50 (or JuniorBees) is actually a rock solid index to own. So..
