What is the best fossil of ALL (geological) TIME? Fossil of the week playoffs are BACK for 2020. Through a series of weekly votes for the geological important league and evolutionary interesting league, the ultimate and definitive winner be crowned on Dec 16th.
Fossil of the week is happy to announce our grand champion for 2020: Tiktaalik!
A 50:50 split for public vote against trilobites was resolved by class vote pipping the win for the wondrous stem tetrapod. Congrats all participants!

The champion of the geological important league, TRILOBITES, faces the champion of the evolutionary interesting league, TIKTAALIK.
We can now name our official winners of each league:
TRILOBITES are crowned geo league champion beating ammonites ~65% of combined vote
TIKTAALIK is crowned evol league champion beating Gorgosaurus ~61%

It's semi-finals time! Only the heavy hitters are left. Time to crown geo league champions AMMONOIDS vs TRILOBITES, and evo league TIKTAALIK vs GORGOSAURUS. Vote now!
In the last playoff before the semis, ocean going AMMONOIDS and FORAMS battle in the geo league, whilst vertebrates GORGOSAURUS and AMBULOCETUS are locked in a battle to the death in the evo league. Vote now!
For playoff 5, its micro-madness and mammal-mashup. Incumbents FORAMINIFERA are challenged by newcomer PHYTOLITHS in the geo league, whilst AMBULOCETUS faces AUSTRALOPITHECUS for Cenozoic supremacy in the evol league. Vote now!
The combined results are in: Plants have been absolutely DEMOLISHED by animals. Ammonites defeat Lycophyes with 78%, whilst Gorgosaurus defeats Archaefructus with 71%. Both are now through to the next round
For playoff 4, its a plants versus animals in a double throw down.
Two giants LYCOPHYTES and AMMONITES face off in the geo league, whilst newcomers GORGOSAURUS and ARCHAEFRUCTUS enter the Mesozoic melee in the evolution league. Vote now!
The results are IN:
Trilobites trounce corals with 70% of combined vote
However, v close for Tiktaalik vs Hallucigenia. Class went one way, twitter the other, but there were only three votes in the combined votes, so Tiktaalik goes through as Palaeozoic champion with 51.6%
