Left Alpbach in the Austrian Alps today after a few memorable days participating in and addressing the @forumalpbach. It’s an amazing conclave, going on annually since 1945, bringing together some of the best minds and most exalted personalities in Western Europe for discussions. At my opening panel discussion I shared the stage with former Italian PM @EnricoLetta, known as “Mr Single Market” for his advocacy of a closer economic union, and environmental activist @OliviaLazard

At @forumalpbach, enjoyed a marvellous hour-long interaction with a group of nearly thirty young people from the autonomous Sud-Tyrol region of Italy (the German-speaking region that @janniksin comes from). There’s little I enjoy more than responding to terrific questions from thoughtful and articulate youngsters about the world we live in, and all need to understand
Alpbach – a place of encounter. 🇪🇺

It was a pleasure to take part in the European Forum Alpbach (@forumalpbach), alongside Austria’s Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, Beate Meinl-Reisinger (@BMeinl), a platform for dialogue that has brought together voices from around the world since 1945 for the defence of multilateralism. In my remarks, I highlighted Europe’s vital role in ensuring the United Nations delivers on peace and security, development and human rights making sure it translate into real results for people. #newUN

Great to take part in the Alpbach European Forum today, speaking on the panel ‘Competing in a Changing World – What's Next for Europe?’ - at the invitation of my Austrian colleague @claudiabauer_at
I was joined by @hamish_falconer 🇬🇧 @claudiabauer_at 🇦🇹 and @ignacyn 🇵🇱 to discuss the future of the Europe Union, and how Europe can remain resilient, competitive and able to act in the face of new challenges that lie ahead.

The future of Europe depends on looking beyond Europe.
I was honoured to speak at @forumalpbach #EFA26 alongside Austrian Foreign Minister @BMeinl, Erste Group CEO Peter Bosek, Albanian Foreign Minister @HoxhaFer and @IWM_Vienna Fellow Ivan Krastev to discuss Europe’s capacity to act and how partnerships can help renew it.
For me, this is about what we can achieve together: Europe’s capabilities, leadership and resources, amplified by the @UN’s global reach, legitimacy and convening power. Europe’s future depends on an intent to reduce vulnerabilities around the world and to focus especially on the promise of the global South in general and the African neighbourhood in particular.
In a more fragmented world, we need equity, not loans; investments, not grants; and co-creation, not solutions imposed from above.
We need to protect the core values that underscore our common humanity.
Above all, we need multilateralism with the confidence to lead, the agility to adapt and the capacity to deliver, as we build a better, more prosperous world for all.

🇪🇺 Back from @forumalpbach: Ukraine, Europe’s security and the return of nuclear deterrence at the heart of the debate.
With @ischinger and @KPisarska, one message: distinguish risk from coercion, deny Russia any nuclear “theory of victory”, and ensure that nuclear escalation can never improve Moscow’s position.
“Ambiguity outside, preparedness inside.”
Great to reconnect too with @EnricoLetta, @ArminLaschet, @kvolker, @MartinSelmayr and so many others in the Tyrolean mountains.

#Altersarmut ist weiblich. Und sie beginnt nicht erst im Alter.
Morgen Montag 9.00 Uhr in Alpbach beim European Forum Alpbach:
Was für großartiges gemeinsames Arbeiten!
