Several pieces in our collection date to the early 1900s. Seeing them today, it’s easy to forget the years of care and craftsmanship that brought them back to life.
Our growing collection has created more opportunities for carpentry and woodworking on historic freight and passenger cars. Have skills you’d like to put to work? Send us a message or fill out our volunteer application to learn about current projects and how to get involved.

I love writing about stuff @FortWayneRails is up to. I have a much bigger story I’m working on about the work they’re doing.

Before we acquired it, the paint on Nickel Plate Road Pullman No. 1 had severely oxidized after years of exposure outdoors.
After applying some polishing and cleaning compounds in select spots, we found the rich green and chocolate brown hues of the car’s traditional paint were still lingering under the dusty surface — along with a newly mirror like finish!
While this touch up work with a thin coat of linseed oil has been done in advance of our open houses, we wanted the car to look every bit as “private varnish” as the name — and its history — embodies: fortwaynerailroad.org/2026/0…
