Robber flies intercept their victims on the wing and now @samueltfabian and @FlySy_Lab have discovered that the aeronauts use a simultaneous combination of obstacle avoidance with their conventional interception strategy to bring down dinner journals.biologists.com/jeb/…

New open access paper out on the wonderful Gnat Ogre (Holcocephala fusca), with @FlySy_Lab, in @J_Exp_Biol . In it, you can find out how these tiny killers deal with physical obstacles on their way to hunt lunch on the wing. 1/6

jeb.biologists.org/content/2… Hamed Rajabi and colleagues suggest that flying insects exhibit a great resilience to wing injuries not only because wings have evolved to be damage tolerant but also because insects might compensate for wing damage by altering wing kinematics.

I’ve always loved joining commencements––the culmination of years of hard work and sacrifice. Even if we can’t get together in person this year, Michelle and I are excited to celebrate the nationwide Class of 2020 and recognize this milestone with you and your loved ones.

+ ICLR did a great job of scheduling a conference for all time zones by combining pre-recorded talks with live q&a's. 10/10

+ It was easy to find interesting posters with keyword search & links to related posters, better than real life. @iclr_conf organizers should be proud of an amazing website. I hope they put the code on github and allow other conferences to reuse it. 7/10

Pluses & minuses of virtual conferences. + Increased participation. Real-life conferences are expensive. ICLR was $50-$100, way cheaper than the thousands flights & hotels cost. This enables so many more people to attend, from the backgrounds we want to reach. @srush_nlp 4/10

Ummm...what's that now?! The world's first known venomous frogs...toxins more potent than Bothrops...delivered via hidden spines in their top lips...still look like other cryptic hylids. So. Many. Questions. 🤯🤯🤯🐸 Also, way to go Brazilian herpos!! 💯🤘 cell.com/current-biology/ful… – at St Louis, MO

In honor of #WorldRobberFlyDay, I’m pleased to announce the launch of my new website dedicated to these charismatic flies: robberfliesoftheworld.com. Here you can find info pages for every taxon, a searchable species catalog, keys, and much more. Very WIP, but I hope you enjoy!
