Bernie, in a lot of ways, is a forefather of hip-hop and a major influence on the West Coast sound. Samples and replays of his keyboard licks became synonymous with West Coast hip-hop.
Bernie was classically trained and played gospel music. He was also a pioneer in the use of the Moog synthesizer for bass, most famously on Parliament’s “Flash Light.” He brought his classically trained, gospel-influenced groove to funk and changed music forever.
Worrell was such a musical genius that he incorporated classical music into funk, like at the end of “Aquaboogie.”
Bernie is one of those unsung heroes of music—a genius beyond compare who made funk music every bit as sophisticated and inventive as jazz.
