In the summer of 1972, Keith Koenig ran his late brother Kevin's one-man waterbed store in Fort Lauderdale. By 1988, Waterbed City had about 14 stores and $35 million in sales. Then waterbeds went into what Koenig calls a precipitous decline.
"We realized we needed to reinvent our business," Koenig says. The brothers changed the name to City Furniture, switched from waterbeds to full-line furniture and brought in all new suppliers. This year, City Furniture became City Home, with Koenig as chairman, his son Andrew as CEO and son-in-law Ryan Cronin as president.

Cleaner hydrogen peroxide has stumped scientists for years. Researchers at UCF may have found the key.
Hydrogen peroxide can help clean circuits on computer chips and treat wastewater, but the current way of making it takes more steps and much more electricity. A team at UCF's Nanoscience Technology Center, led by associate professor Yang Yang, is making it with just water, oxygen and small amounts of fluorine, which seem to be the missing piece. The method is also small enough for businesses to produce it continuously at 100% purity.

Jimmy Buffett planned his estate. Yet his widow and his longtime business advisor are now in court.
Buffett named his wife, Jane, and advisor Rick Mozenter co-trustees of the marital trust meant to provide her income. In court filings, Jane Buffett says Mozenter kept her waiting a year and a half for an income projection, and it came in under $2 million a year on $275 million in assets. Each now wants a judge to remove the other as trustee.

Florida has about 255,000 EVs on the road, second only to California. But Optimus Energy Solutions founder Ben Pauluhn says building chargers moves at the speed of local bureaucrats and utility timelines.
"We just can't get (chargers) out in the field fast enough," he says. The Mount Dora company bought Duke Energy's South Carolina EV-charging network in June and has installed chargers at AdventHealth, UF Health and Orlando Health hospitals.

In 2022, NextEra Energy and Florida Power & Light set a goal to eliminate carbon emissions entirely by 2045, with 62% of FPL's power decarbonized by 2035.
FPL's own 10-year site plan tells a different story. It now projects just 42% clean power by 2035, and it's still planning to add natural gas capacity along the way.
Getting there means a massive solar buildout, 12,293 more megawatts by 2035 across 48 identified sites, with 89 more plants still needed. Florida Trend estimates the full buildout could take about 127 square miles of land, more than the city of Orlando.
FPL says sites are designed to avoid impacts to protected wetlands, and not every acre ends up covered in panels.

Shawn Cutter grew up in Ohio's Amish country, a sixth-generation farmer. Now he's reimagining what a data center campus can look like.
His venture, EnergiAcres, puts data centers, natural gas power plants, and greenhouses on the same site. Waste heat and carbon dioxide from the power plant are routed to the greenhouses, boosting crop growth nearby. His first project: a $6-billion-plus campus in north-central Ohio, generating up to a gigawatt onsite, enough to power a town.

Owner Sunbeam and developer Stiles broke ground on 125-acre Miramar Cove, a $1-billion project that includes a swimmable 5.5-acre water basin fronted by dining, retail, entertainment, and a fountain show.
Miramar Cove will total 2,874 residences, 400,000 square feet of retail, 125,000 square feet of offices, a 185-key hotel, five miles of walking paths, 25 acres of nature trails, and 10 acres of green space.
The project, adjacent to Sunbeam's Miramar Park of Commerce, is expected to open in late 2028.

On Sept. 8, 1565, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés defeated a French settlement and claimed the land for Spain, naming it St. Augustine in honor of the Catholic saint.
The city is now considered the country's oldest continuously occupied European settlement, though Pensacola actually got there first before hurricanes forced a habitation gap until 1698.
This year's Founder's Day Celebration brought the Men of Menéndez ashore in chalupa boats. That same history now drives an estimated $3.8 billion and supports more than 30,000 jobs for St. Johns County each year.
